Man indicted for shooting fireworks at Shibuya scramble crossing

A 35-year-old man who shot fireworks over a crowd at Tokyo’s famous Shibuya scramble crossing last year has been sent to prosecutors.

The man, who is a self-employed translator from Kanagawa Prefecture, has been charged with violation of the Road Traffic Law, prosecutors said.

The incident occurred at around 10 p.m. on Nov 14, Kyodo News reported. The man walked on the crowded crossing and began shooting 50 fireworks over the heads of pedestrians for about one minute.

Nobody was injured, although videos taken by pedestrians showed some of the fireworks narrowly missing people’s heads.

The man was arrested at the scene, standing in the middle of the crossing speaking incomprehensibly through a loudspeaker, after traffic had stopped.

He was quoted by police as saying he wanted to stand out.

Geez, now because he acted like a kid, he doesnt get named? Wonder what he "translated"?

He should be charged with reckless endangerment,

So... the translator was shouting unrecognizable gibberish through a mic while shooting fireworks? Anyway, there are tons of punks in my area that sit in parks at night and shoot fireworks at apartment buildings and police do nothing. Guess you gotta block a busy street.

It should be attempted murder. What if there was a small child crossing, or a baby, got hit. Possibilities of risks should be considered properly

Was he trying to copy the Shibuya crossing firework scene from Alice in Borderland?

has been charged with violation of the Road Traffic Law

is that all? that seams a bit of a wishy washy charge, with very little bite to it, is the charge about the same as a unsafe lane change, or a head light out, or speeding. its not quite reckless endangerment of life charge ( if there is something like this in Japan) or assault, or attempted arson/assult.

if its a road traffic law, what is the penalty like to be? a small fine?

If he jumped in front of a running train he will stand out even more!??

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

He wanted to stand out but his name wasn’t even important enough to make the article talking about his arrest.

He just got the standard age/gender/occupation treatment. That’s a fail.
