Man kept mother’s body in bathroom since her death last August

Police in Izumi, Osaka Prefecture, on Saturday arrested a 52-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of abandoning the body of his mother.

According to police, the man told them his 76-year-old mother died last August, Sankei Shimbun reported. He was quoted by police as saying one day he called out to her while she was in bed and she was not responsive. When he realized she was dead, he said he didn’t know what to do, so he placed her body in the bathroom.

Police said the man lived alone with his mother. However, his aunt (his mother's younger sister) contacted police on March 21 and said she had not been able to contact her sister for some time. Police visited the home on Friday and found the body.

How is it "abandoning" if he kept it?

When he realized she was dead, he said he didn’t know what to do,

But, you can bet he knew how to access her pension payments.

I hope he didn't use the same bathroom, shower etc.

Why put her in the bathroom? Because it's a small room and you can close the door so he wouldn't have to smell his mother's rotting corpse while he collected her pension

How many of these middle-aged unemployed losers are depending on their parents? You're not a baby anymore.

This story makes me suspicious about why japanese people are reluctant to invite inside their houses.

@Hawkeye

Was he collecting her social security?

He didn't know what to do? Bet he sure knew how to collect her pension

I’ve said it before, but this will become a regular thing. There are literally hundreds of thousands of Hikikomori. Their mothers do everything for them. As they age their mothers will die (or they will kill them). And nobody should expect that they’ll suddenly become responsible.

But - I think the sister could have worried a lot earlier.

if you didn’t hear from a sibling for months you’d think you’d wonder why.

Too many men dropped out of society and never grew up. Talk to them and they know everything though.

Never thought having skeletons in your closet would become a literal thing.

I can't even begin to imagine the stench coming from the bathroom.

Nice son, did not even have the decency to have her cremated. Was he collecting her social security? Wouldn't a 6 month old rotting corpse smell and alert neighbors? How did he use the Ohuro and toilet with her in the bathroom. In my Japanese apartment there is barely enough room for moving around let alone storing a body. Why is it called abandoning a body when he was in possession of it at home?

I hope he gets jailed for it.

Not just a fine

What's up with all these people in Japan keeping their dead parents' bodies in their homes? In some cases murdering them first.
