Man killed, 3 others stabbed in same street within 10 minutes in Chiba

A 31-year-old man was stabbed to death in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, and three others wounded on Monday night, in what police believe was the work of the same attacker.

According to police, all four attacks took place within 10 minutes on a 50-meter-long poorly-lit street in Akebono, Kashiwa.

NTV quoted police as saying the first attack took place at around 11:35 p.m. when a man on his bike was slashed. A few minutes later, Hiroya Ikema was stabbed several times in the neck and back and his briefcase and wallet were stolen. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

In the third incident, the assailant accosted another man walking along the street and demanded money before cutting him on the hand. In the fourth incident, a driver stopped his car when he saw the stabbing victim lying on the ground, and was attacked. The suspect stole the car which was found three hours later in the parking area of a convenience store about 1.5 kilometers away. Police said surveillance camera footage showed the driver getting out and walking away.

Police dispatched 50 riot police to watch over 17 schools in the morning and afternoon on Tuesday.

The suspect is described as being 170-175 cms tall, about 30-40 years old and was wearing a black down jacket, black cap, white face mask and sunglasses.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 04-7148-0110.

Yeah, someone gets stuck and it is definitely a member of the yakuza, somebody gets beaten up and it is the guys with tattoos, somebody gets murdered and guess who? To whit the rest of the Japanese population is totally non-involved.

Where in this story does it say police are looking for a member of the Inagawa Kai, or maybe the Yamaguchi gumi? Given the population of approx. 130 million on this island, probably a safer beat to assume somebody who has cracked under the social pressures of society or some nutter off his meds.....

Robbery could be the motive but the crime itself suggests abnormalities.

Each stabbing incident painfully reminds me of the Akihabara massacre in which I lost an acquaintance. May this incident is followed up by the execution of Tomohiro Kato and the prompt arrest of this clown dressed in black attacking people.

As tragic as this situation is, it is the kind of behavior one expects in human society, and the higher the population, the higher the frequency of such crimes. Japanese should be thankful that they are living in one of the safest nations in the world. Japan is not crime free, but far safer than almost any other society.

Have been wary of men covered in masks, glasses and hats. Now, more than ever.

These random attacks are increasing and I fear only going to get worse with the lack of job security and the tanking economy.

please show where the economy is tanking , can you show us data that suggests this ?

Outlandish to make such a statement because some fruit loop goes on a slashing spree, perhaps he is just unhinged, or maybe he caught his wofe cheating or ....................... how can you relate it to a economy tanking when it is not .

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Thumbs down for pointing out the truth about the economy for your average or poorer than average Taro?? Yikes.

Nothing wrong with pointing out that the economy is in a bad position. Yet, saying that it is directly attributible to this crime is like saying the rise in the global temperatures made this guy kill someone. There could have been a number of other reasons for which this lunatic killed. I'm sure there are a lot of down-in -their-luck homeless people who don't go commiting crimes. Being poor is a bad excuse to go out and kill someone.

Shocking to read of these crimes happening with seemingly increasing frequency in Japan.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

these random robberies that end in death are really frightening and incomprehensible. reminds me of the college girl murdered near kichijoji last year for a few thousand yen. when caught, i hope he gets the death penalty.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I hope they catch this looney soon!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Unfortunately the description/illustration they showed on the news of the suspect is so poor I don't think anyone will be able to pinpoint him from it. A guy completely covered up in a hoodie with big square sunglasses and a mask.

Their best bet is to get information by someone who has seen someone acting strangely in their neighborhood. That's how they caught the guy who kidnapped the elementary school girl two months ago.

Otherwise another way might be to get the fingerprints off the stolen car and hope for a match with anyone that gets taken in to a police station.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I really hope they catch this lunatic soon, but am worried that they might not be able to do so until it happens again. By the way, it sure is telling when people bring up violent death cases that happened either a year or years ago to point out the fact that Japan is getting really dangerous, when it would only take incidents happening mere days ago to point out the same fact with countries like the U.S.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Awesome description... Should have no trouble finding him.... Pfffft.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Pfff hope they catch this nutcase, seems like more and more of these kind of news stories come out every year (akihabara stabbing, the mass stabber in Osaka etc)

Where was that woman atacked just the other day? Wasn't that in Matsudo or Kashiwa? I wonder if it's the same guy.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Police said surveillance camera footage showed the driver getting out and walking away.

Rather than show a meaningless cartoon figure of the guys description to the public, wouldn't the video footage showing the suspect be more useful?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Please develop a transparent mask to at least remove one way of criminals hiding themselves.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Does it happen there often ?

Argus Tuft: No, it doesn't. This is the most horrific killing to come out of Kashiwa in the 15+ years I've been living there. I actually think Matsudo (one rapid stop away towards Tokyo) and Kita Senju (two rapid stops away towards Tokyo) are far more dangerous. Even Tsuchiura (further up the Joban line towards Mito) is more notorious for gangs and bosozoku. Kashiwa has it's robberies, thefts, fist fights, and crazy drivers, but rarely cold-blooded killings.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

It must be incredibly alarming for you guys out that way, let's hope they catch this lunatic in the next 24 hours.

Argus Tuft: Yes, it is. On the day after it happened, we could hear a helicopter flying close by. After my wife and I heard about it on the news on the TV, we realized that it must've been a TV crew. Schools around our area had parents walk with their kids and in groups, just to be safe.

I feel relieved now upon hearing that they likely caught the suspect. They say that he lives in an apartment about 20 meters away from where the crime took place. He seemed to be acting very strangely. TV crew interviewed him once and he said that he didn't see it happen. Then he went back into his apartment. Later, he came out again, and then he started telling them all kinds of details (even though other witnesses said that it was too dark for them to be sure of what they had seen).

OK I am officially freaked out now. I read the story about the stabbing in China a few days ago and misread it as Chiba, and was horrified. When I clicked on it and realised my mistake, I suddenly had a vision of a stabbing spree in Kashiwa specifically. Kashiwa being where a friend of mine lives I guess. But this is a little too close to - whats the word or when you see something and then it happens? - forget the English now. Although dont think it IS English! Oh, that is going to BUG me now!!! Not deja vu. The other one!

I'm thinking Japan needs to wake up and stop thinking this is a "safety" country.

Well if you think it is time to start carrying a weapon for our own protection because of some random crimes, go right ahead. This happened in Chiba and is nationwide news. In the meantime, every single town in your home country has crimes galore which don't even make the newspaper. If you are from Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Luxembourg or Bahrain which have lower crime rates, than I am wrong.

I'm glad my ex doesn't work in Kashiwa any more... every time I read about people attacked/killed there I get a sinking feeling.

I don't see how the economy has anything to do with this - evil b@st@rds are evil b@st@rds no matter what the economy's like, and this was a particularly evil b@st@rd. I hope the people who were injured can recover quickly, and RIP to the poor guy who was murdered.

Come on Kashiwa police - catch this piece of scum before he attacks someone else.

China?? Chiba?? Anyway, may this idiot in CHIBA did see that crazy stabbing news out in China and thought it would be cool to go do the same crazy but in JAPAN?? I would not be too surprised and as for SAFETY JAPAN???

Japanese law enforcement. How much faith do we really have in them??

They did alright in Mie yesterday.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

I am worried about all this knife stabbing incident in Japan, but what worries me most is that there are too many police patrol around areas where crimes are not even committed but the lonley and dark areas are left alone **

Kashiwa ... every time I read about people attacked/killed there I get a sinking feeling.

Does it happen there often ? I'm only asking because I don't know the area at all.

@Kennytheking - Thanks for the reply.

Kashiwa has it's robberies, thefts, fist fights, and crazy drivers, but rarely cold-blooded killings.

Sounds just like any other populated area surrounding Tokyo then. It must be incredibly alarming for you guys out that way, let's hope they catch this lunatic in the next 24 hours.

How can man so wicked n mean to his fellow men. He needs to suffer for his deed

It sounds to me like he was copying the stabbings in China.

Damn! I was in Kashiwa yesterday!

Japan sure has an infatuation with knife attacks. Expect the unexpected!

True, Japan needs to wake up since they are so ingeuous about taking risky situations. For example, the 15 year old girl who was strangled... she was walking alone in a dark and deserted place at 10:30 pm. Why her parents didn't pick her up the station? I usually don't think about crime itself but psychopaths. That cyclist was lucky not to be killed when he confidently stopped at a stranger suspicious called. I know, we all want to help others, but unfortunately raw reality take charge its price. I am coming from a place with high crime rate and I am used to live with that sense, even in Japan.

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

At 26 year old lady that was bashed with a last week pipe was only kilometres away.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Wow! The loons just keep on coming, don't they? This one doesn't really fit the MO of the other attack in Kashiwa, so I dare say they are not related. These kinds of sprees don't usually start until summer. It looks like it's gonna be a busts u mer for the cops.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Real nutters on the loose, and a completely defenseless society. In addition to the usual criminal-robber types there are the mentally unhinged variety. The police always arrive well after the fact.

@tmarie, the thumb-downers don't like their logically incompetent economic theories scrutinized by reality.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Well if you think it is time to start carrying a weapon for our own protection because of some random crimes, go right ahead.

I know plenty of women here who do carry something for protection. I'm not that fearful. Yet.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Jack, I've said no such thing. I think one can assume though since this guy was robbing for money that mone is an issue for him, no? Rich folks don't rob people.

I agree, any number of reasons - and certainly a lunatic but robbing for money is a pretty good indication of something. Any excuse to go and kill someone is a bad excuse.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

please show where the economy is tanking , can you show us data that suggests this ?

Abenomics is making the fat cats richer and is killing the middle class, working poor and poor. Stats about dispatch companies, lack of job security, falling wages, rising prices are all over the place. Just because growth is up doesn't mean the economy is getting better for your average person in Japan. More folks on welfare than ever before - and with a shrinking population might I add. Do you really need this explained to you?

-7 ( +7 / -14 )

Tragic for that family that lost their son.

I'm thinking Japan needs to wake up and stop thinking this is a "safety" country. The guy on the bicycle stopped when this guy asked him to - dressed in black, mask on and sunglasses at night... For the sake of children's safety, I wish they would close Kashiwa-area schools for the time being.

-12 ( +7 / -19 )

Sounds like the work of one angry disenfranchised Yak.
