A 68-year-old man who was asleep in bed was killed after a car crashed into his house in Ota, Gunma Prefecture, on Friday night.
Police said the driver of the car, Kazuki Kido, 23, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving resulting in death, Fuji TV reported. They are also questioning a man who was a passenger in Kido’s car.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 11:50 p.m. It was raining at the time.
The wooden house, occupied by Tatsuaki Mita and his 35-year-old son, is situated between the two roads of a Y junction. The car slammed into the house, injuring Mita. He was taken to hospital where he died at around 6 a.m. Saturday. His son, who was sleeping in another room, was not injured, police said.

What were you doing? I was riding shotgun. What was he doing? He was driving. Why didn't you stop him? From what? From driving into the guy's house? I didn't know he was going to do that. Why didn't you know? You have a driver's license correct? Yes, but I had no way of knowing. But you have a good license with a perfect driving record so it means you are an expert, right? Err... well, I am actually a paper driver. But you scored 100% on the test so you could actually pilot the Space Shuttle if you so chose, couldn't you? Um...
Ten days later, after intense questioning by the best Japan has to offer, he breaks and confesses to knowing his friend was going to make a mistake and drive into that house and he did nothing to prevent it.. Ninety-nine percent conviction rate is held up for an envious world to see.

I’d say that any victim of any reckless behaviour is a victim of bad luck.

I wonder how much most commentators drive. Living at top section of a Y intersection without some massive barrier is not a matter of bad luck and neither is the high probability of a car smashing through during inclement weather or even some other sort of accident. Its all risk taken by the individual who takes up residence there. I would not be caught dead dwelling in such a place nor a house on the shore of the east coast of this country either. I sure as heck would not be sleeping on the first floor. My eyes would be wide as saucers every time I went down there with constant glances at that particular wall.

The law in Japan says it is illegal to knowingly ride in a care driven by a drunk driver. This is going to be especially enforced when there has been a death.
