Bit missing in this story. Revenge for what I wonder? Was the guy mentally disturbed or was he ill treated at the facility? I mean I'm sure it will take time to get the facts but I doubt I'll see it updated on here...

Police arrested Monday a 22-year-old man for allegedly stabbing to death the head of a foster home in Tokyo where the man used to live, with the suspect saying he wanted revenge against the facility

Revenge on what?

"Omori always thought about children seriously," said Somei Muto, his longtime friend who manages similar facilities. "I can't accept his death at all. I can't believe it."

Sounds like his colleagues thinks highly of him.

The residents and staff need to be interviewed for police to establish a motive....

Totally agree! Better chance of finding out more by watching the "wide-shows" over the next few days. Better chance of an update (ad nauseam) there!

From what I have heard, it is pretty rough for kids in the foster system. Once they reach 18, they must leave without many skills to get work it or anywhere to go. Regardless of intelligence or kindness, those foster children don't have any money to go to school or a place to live to get a job. A lot of girls go into the sex industry because they don't have much choice. The guys I'm not sure about. I wonder if they teach the kids about joining the military or police force.

The sad part is that these kids quite often have family who could actually help them.

I think it's quite obvious he has mental health issues. The revenge motive could just be a delusion. This could have been much worse than only one death. It seems this guy had a golden heart. It's very sad that he was killed by one of the kids he housed.

Many of the kids in foster homes are orphans.

Like others here when I started reading the article I was thinking revenge for abuse, maybe sexual abuse. But then as I read on and saw the age he entered the home, I realised he is probably, for whatever reason in his past or his personality, just another disgruntled, inadequate, violence-inclined teenager with a dangerously large chip on his shoulder.

I suspect he had trouble facing life and instead of being responsible for his own life he decided to blame someone else and vent his frustrations on him.

If he was mistreated in the facility, wouldn't he have attacked the guy while he still lived there?

Perhaps he had bitterness over having a parentless childhood? Or maybe he had some bad experiences at this home?

Whatever the reasons this is very sad.

It's not that easy. Alleged victims of alleged abuse can be paralysed with fear at the time. It can be terrifying.

I think any institution, building or room that holds children should have high levels of security. At least start by locking doors to prevent access by members of the public.

revenge for what? was this guy sexually abused? was he bullied? was he starved of food? didn't he get on with the conditions he was in? or does it stem back to why he was in a foster home IE, his parents treatment to him or did the have a stormy marriage leading to divorce? but to murder someone at this home seems rather odd at this moment, we will have to wait and see what the ref motive was for this hernias crime. if he didn't like this facility, he's really going to hate the next one. RIP to Omori san

It is tragedies like this that have pushed me to try and do something to help children who end up spending most of their lives in children's homes. My non-profit foundation, JOEE, (joee.jp) is in its infancy but we are already starting to provide immersive English-teaching with music, puppets, games and stories for kids growing up in institutionalized care. The children need positive experiences, connections and joy in their lives; and they need job skills when they exit the system at age 18 so they will have hope for the future. By beginning enjoyable English instruction at an early age, I intend to help the kids learn native-level pronunciation and, at the very least, basic English language capabilities. I know from experience that five-year olds can learn a new language in a single year through positive immersive language experiences. I hope that we can make a difference in the lives of these children. They need all the support that they can get!

Bit like those revenge school killings in America, when they go back to their old school and kill people, with no apparent motive, its probably psychosis from nicotine,unemployment or worse.

Some confusion over doing the right thing, waste wise, even China got confused, but they made the cuts and closed loss making imports, many young people can't articulate why they feel they weren't prepared, I tell them the best you can hope for is vocabulary, so that your mind stays rational, because for sure we have done some confusing things and we are in for a rough time ahead, hence the other vulnerable group is the infanticiding mothers.

My sister ‘was’ doing the same thing in Australia. Now, she suffers from severe PTSD after one of the kids she was caring for moved back home after six months of living with her and hung themself a week later. The kid was a 12 year old girl. There is a very dark side to fostering children and you need to be emotionally prepared for when things go wrong.

How can you say the children were safe just because they were on a different floor? Was this psycho afraid to walk up stairs?
