Man questioned on suspicion of multiple thefts on JR Yamanote Line trains

Police in Tokyo are questioning a 68-year-old man on suspicion of carrying out multiple thefts aboard JR Yamanote Line trains.

According to police, at around 5:50 a.m. on July 22, the suspect, Shigeo Suzuki, allegedly stole a wallet containing 18,000 yen in cash from a 52-year-old man who was sleeping on a train on the Yamanote Line between Kanda an Akihabara stations, Fuji TV reported. Suzuki is believed to have snatched the wallet from the back pocket of his victim’s pants.

Suzuki was observed by a security guard on the train and was detained after leaving the train.

Police believe Suzuki, who has remained silent on the charge, singled out his snoozing victim aboard the train and sat next to him so he could remove the wallet.

Since February of this year, about 80 pickpocketing cases have been reported by passengers in Yamanote Line cars, with cash losses totalling around 1.45 million yen. Police are questioning Suzuki, who has no fixed address or occupation, about his involvement in those cases.

No occupation? This is discrimination. He is a pickpocket and now because of the security guard he is out of work.

Guys get busted all the time for groping. Just because every single case is not reported in English in Japan Today does not mean it is not happening.
