According to police, the man entered the Daily Yamazaki store at around 3 a.m. and threatened the 19-year-old male employee with a screwdriver, Fuji TV reported. He forced the employee to take him to the safe and then open it.

"wearing a black parka with a hood"

That should have tipped off people that something is wrong with this guy. It's too hot for that.

700,000 yen is quite a lot of money for a convenience store to keep at night. Either the manager doesn't know anything about security, or he doesn't care because he is insured 110%.

One more thing. How was this pulled off using a screwdriver? The employee couldn't have mistaken it for a knife...!

A screwdriver? Really? Come on.

Rich convenience store! That is first time I have read about a convenience store robbery netting that kind of money. Usually, they are talking about a couple of man yen.

And now wait for the calls to ban screwdrivers...

Was it a normal screwdriver of Phillips head? Details please.

Electric screwdriver.

Sounds like his friend did it and they split the funds. Mo injuries sounds a bit fishy, and he cooperated so swiftly without a fight. Sounds dodgy...

Whatever it was, it was sufficient to screw the combini out of 700,000 yen!

Did he threaten to loosen some screws? Come on, a screw driver? Maybe the cashier was in on it.

I think I am right, do I sound wrong on this one?

Readers, please note that a screwdriver can be a formidable weapon.

I am sure the multiple security cams show what really happened. Sounds like he got into the safe in the back for that amount.

Most stores only keep a small amount of cash in the registers.

I wouldn't like to have some nutter waving a screwdriver around as a weapon - they are long, metal, pointy, stabby items. Get one of those in your eye/head/stomach/back, you're screwed.

I think the robber is a bit screwed up in the head! I say put the screws to him!

A screwdriver doesn't sound that dangerous, but it sure is, being able to puncture your organs. Plus in Japan you have the added danger that the ambulance staff will look at the wound and seeing that it's not bleeding much and looks just tiny on the outside, might misdiagnose it and won't give it the urgency it need's to stop the internal bleeding. Happened with one of the victims at the Akiba-stabbing.

I think you could rob a convenience store in Japan with a stuffed animal if you were so inclined.

Time to keep tazers and meat cleavers behind the counters.
