A man has been arrested in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido, for stealing a support vehicle that came to his aid after he ran out of gas on a highway.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 9 a.m. on Friday morning. TV Asahi reported that the man, Ryoma Sato, 37, was driving along a highway when he ran out of gas.

When a highway patrol rescue vehicle came to his aid, Sato drove away in the vehicle, going the wrong way along the highway. He was caught by police about 30 minutes later, some 60 kms away near Sapporo.

Police quoted Sato as saying he stole the support vehicle because he had been in a hurry to meet someone.

What happened to his "cellphone" ??? (After all, everyone has one and it's surely better to call than to be arrested !)

For a person who can forget to check the fuel guage of the car before driving, I bet he also has problem keeping his cellphone with him.

Mr. Sato may have a future in politics: he summoned then decisively steered public resources toward a higher(his own) purpose.

I'm curious whom he was headed to meet. Anyone willing to steal a rescue vehicle to keep an appointment is up to no good. Or he's just not too bright...

My exact thinking. Wars have been fought over women, stealing a car is very minor.

This guy didn't only stole the patrol car, he drove for 30 minutes in the opposite direction in the highway. This is a miracle that he didn't make an accident.

Why did he then head off down the highway in the opposite direction? :-)

Ended up in cuffs. Didn't think it through did he? After missing his liaison I bet he'll be needing one or the other of those hands.

People do some funny things sometimes. I like stories like this.

What an idiot. So now, not only was he extremely late for his 'appointment', he was clearly lying about it in the first place if he drove off in the opposite direction of where he was heading originally. Scumbag. Hope he pays for it. And if he was headed towards some tryst or other shady meeting, I hope that's made public.

Those highway guys have finally been of some use. I usually see them driving up and down the highways, dead on the speed limit , yellow lights flashing- slightly infuriating....

Not everyone has a cell phone. I don't. Gave mine up 14 months ago.
