A police officer in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, failed to prevent a man he was questioning from hitting an acquaintance twice with his car, resulting in the man's death.
According to a TV Asahi report, the driver, identified as Kenichi Oji, 47, was sitting in his car talking with an acquaintance on the sidewalk at around 10 p.m. Sunday outside JR Himeji Station when the officer approached them to ask what they were doing. Witnesses were quoted as saying that Oji suddenly accelerated and hit his acquaintance with his car. He then stopped the car and while the officer tried to stop him, he backed up, hitting the victim again.
The victim was taken to hospital where he was confirmed dead. Oji was arrested at the scene. During police questioning, he was quoted as saying he did not mean to hurt his acquaintance.

Oji, "I did not mean to hurt my acquaintance"
He could have said "I was drunk at the time and don't remember," but didn't want to get DUI as well.

"Didnt mean to...."?!
To be fair, how exactly was the officer supposed to stop him? They dont have guns, he was already inside the car, (the officer wasnt), all he could have done is drag the victim out of harms way if he had even seen it coming - which I bet he didnt!

They do have guns, just rarely use them

I did wonder why the police were running from the north exit area to the south. The police in Himeji are not equipped to do anything. A few years on Saturday nights the police halfheartedly chase young bikers around the main road in front of the station. Honestly, it was something like out of Benny Hill. I used to buy a beer and watch the farce for 10 minutes (better than anything on TV). So I am sad to hear about the death, but not overly surprised.

This is EXACTLY why this happened:
While the guy was busy killing his friend, the copy was likely frozen in fear, like so:
"Eh?! Nani?! Eh?! Nan da?!"
Not saying this particular cop is an idiot, per se, just the J-cops don't aren't exactly trained to respond "in the moment' like this. They're trained to welcome confessing criminals into the police box so they can fill out paperwork, and keep a keen eye for those pesky foreigners on bikes.

I agree to be fair it seems it would of been extremely hard for the officer to stop this incident. of course some posters will say shoot the the tires or do some other hollywood tv bs but that isnt the real world. In real life not on your hollywood imanination this type of incident would of been extremly hard to have stop.

Seriously what could You have done you walk up to a car and it suddenly acellerates you arent the flash.. if that were possible there would be a reduction in policevchases worldwide. keep an openmind before jumping on the keystone cop bandwagon.

Need I say more...?

Missing a lot of pertinent information here. Let's wait until a more comprehensible story is released before passing judgment on the driver or the policeman.

"he did not mean to hurt his acquaintance."
But twice??? If I ever heard a lame excuse, this is definitely one of them!!!

I guess when I watch these horror movies where the police can't do anything but get chopped up or eaten by the criminal/monster, they were acting like Himeji's police force.

This guy is clearly a capable driver. Bet you he had a gold menkyusho before this incident....

In defense of the posters slamming these cops, I'm not sure if the guy would have backed up and hit him again had the officer IMMEDIATELY drawn his weapon, and pointed it at him, and started screaming at him. He hit him twice, not once. Cops are cops because they are supposed to be trained to react in situations like this.

Yes!!!! Indeed! That's the Idea!
There's such a thing as Escalation of Force... It doesn't start out, as so many regulars here on JT like to use these absurd analogies of guns blazing and bullets flying.... It starts out with simple Voice Commands, then proceeds to more Physical Levels. Or it could be something as simple as Taking the Keys away, or Pulling the driver from the vehicle.
Unfortunately Too many people are being seriously injured or killed while it's business as usual for you know who...
ChibaChick
Yes gaijinfo you do have a point. I didnt realise cops even have guns here! (apologies Gobshite!)
Clearly this is a training issue.

Hard to imagine how this man ran over his friend the first time if his aquaintance talking with him from the sidewalk. Wouldn't he have been standing next to the passenger window? Or was both of the reading each others lips through the front windshield?

Thank you! I have been wondering the same thing all day. Something missing from this account.

Speculation rife on this one, eh! The number of different ways this could have gone down are numerous to say the least but still folks have it all squared away..and without any information too. Amazing! But I digress..I too shall speculate...Driver spots officer approach. Alerts friend. Starts engine/engages drive assuming vehicle isnt already running and in gear of course. Officer engages driver and pedestrian. Pedestrian takes off, walking in front of car. Driver then takes off without warning while still looking at officer. Nails pedestrian. Pedestrian goes under car, possibly under a wheel. Driver thinks "OhcrapI'vehitBob!". Slams it in reverse and gives pedestrian another go, thinking hes just reversing off him. Time from officer engagement to pedestrian getting hit? No more than 5 ~10 seconds. So, theres a very strong likelihood that he really didnt mean to hurt his friend. In my version of events, at least!

sidesmile: I think that sounds like a very reasonable idea of what happened. I wish that the story was clearer with the information...

Traffic police officers, the ones with the white hats you see dont carry guns.
Badge213
even if they did the timeline and exact sequence could of made it impossible to stop the guy.
Lowly
I this case, hard for the cop to stop him I'd imagine.
If window open, I guess he could try and jump in and restrain him, tho to do that to a moving car, the car might veer and someone else would be hurt.
Maitake
The cop wet his pants I bet.

People who suddenly accelerate away from a cop aren't likely to pay attention to anything the cop says - whether the cop speaks the command or yells it, or whether he pulls his weapon or not. That said, something's not right with this article. The driver is talking to his friend, then suddenly accelerates and RUNS HIM OVER?!
How Bob
Great driving skills these japanese, huh !
