Man sentenced to life for killing 9-year-old girl in 2004 loses appeal

A 43-year-old man sentenced to life in prison for killing a 9-year-old girl in Tsuyama, Okayama Prefecture, in 2004, has had his appeal turned down.

The Okayama branch of the Hiroshima High Court upheld the ruling on Jan 6 this year by the Okayama District Court against Kunihiko Katsuta who has been in prison since 2016 for a previous crime, Kyodo News reported.

Yukiko Tsutsushio was stabbed to death after she returned home from school just after 3 p.m. on Sept 3, 2004. Her parents were out at the time. Her sister came home at about 3:30 p.m. and found Yukiko with multiple stab wounds to her chest and stomach.

More than 60,000 police officers worked on the case but failed to turn up any solid clues.

The case took a dramatic turn in May 2018 when Katsuta, in jail, said that he had killed Yukiko. Police questioned Katsuta who told them he saw Yukiko walking home alone and followed her.

Katsuta was convicted of attempted murder in 2016 after he stabbed a junior high school girl on a street in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, in 2015. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Katsuta was also jailed in 2010 for four years for assaulting several school children. He said at the time he liked hitting children to see the look of terror on their faces and told the court he had punched children on at least 70 occasions.

At the initial trial, the Himeji branch of the Kobe District Court noted in its ruling that Katsuta had developed an interest in animation while at high school and a taste for seeing girls' shirts soaked in blood, which later grew into an urge to stab girls.

Another case of a mental that confess crimes he didn't commit to get attention.

I bet that he didn't have a fair trial.

We'll never know because the records of the trials are kept in secret to never be seen.

Sounds like a great guy.... Likes to hit children to see the look of terror on their faces??? Death penalty right there!

Should've been executed already. Don't want my tax yen paying for his food or care

Agree with you all that the criminals should pay for the crime.

But what if there's another killer out there?!

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

Good, now hang ‘em instead and stop wasting tax money

10 ( +11 / -1 )

60,000 police officers?!?

The maggot should be hung. He has forfeited any "right" he has to be kept alive.

Not a single tear will fall if he is executed.

Killers of children are a special breed. Agree with Sanjinosebleed, Speed, WA4TKG, and Fighto!.

guy need to be hanged.no mercy.

He's got a lot of nerve asking for an appeal. He needs to shut up and take his lumps like a man.

Do the crime, do the time.

He probably did it judging on his past. However, he shouldn’t be in prison for a crime if there is no evidence against him other than a confession…..which could have been beaten out of him.

After wading through the usual medieval, blood thirsty “hang ‘em high”, “cut his balls off” Japan Today posters’ comments, the ones from Lunatic and Gazman resonate with me.

What if he didn’t do it?

He might be a serial confessor to crimes he didn’t commit. It happens.

In general, I have zero confidence in the police and the prosecutors to get the right person for crimes at the best of times, They rely on confessions, quite possibly forced confessions, in some cases. A lot can happen in 23 days’ interrogation

The real killer could still be out there and no one is looking for him, that’s a depressing thought.

Not a fan of the death penalty, but in this case it seems hard not to justify it. When there is basically a zero percent chance for rehabilitation into society, why bother letting him live?

Society would be far better off using a rope rather than wasting money sustaining him.

If you have a death penalty, I don't know why you would spare a psycho like this from it. Does 4 years in jail for assaulting kids, comes out and stabs a junior high school, then stabs a nine year old? How long is a life sentence? He will be let out sooner or later, and then what?

Laughable that there are people here saying, "but what if he didn't really murder the 9 year old girl?"

He has openly admitted to enjoying physically assaulting school children. He has openly admitted that he has an urge to stab girls. He did, most definitely, stab a junior high school girl in 2015.

Even if he were, for some inexplicable reason, lying when he claims he stabbed the 9 year old to death, he has still done this before. He has done horrific things and shown zero remorse for them. Man should have already been given the death penalty - that he has the nerve to appeal his sentence...

He is sick !!

Katsuta must never be released, but hanging him is not the way to treat a human being with a very troubled mind. The Nazis killed the insane. The world must hold to a higher standard.

Murderers must go through the death penalty, but at least this human garbage will spend the rest of his life in prison..

60,000 police officers?!?

And ??..

This guy was and still is a NUT CASE, for him to file an appeal on the hopes of winning is his wild imagination to want to get out and fulfill his crazed mind to punch, stab and kill children. This guy only desire to get out is to do what he said " he liked hitting children to see the look of terror on their faces. He was already in jail for a crime he committed and had many other priors. This is a guy that should have seen the gallows instead of seeing another day to request a dream for an appeal.

More than 60,000 police officers worked on the case but failed to turn up any solid clues.

That is because everyone thinks the other guy is working on the case, so they all end up giving a half-hearted effort.

Katsuta is 101% deranged and should be removed from society for 101 years. No appeals.

sounds like each and every one of those 60,000 police officers should also be imprisoned as well as that piece of garbage.

despite all those charges and crimes, and he STILL walked freely afterwards!???

and not one of those 60,000 cops could figure things out?

why? Was this scum a super genius?!?!

after they dispose the waste of space, they should investigate how incompetent the police force is as well.
