Man questioned over crossbow attack on cyclist in Ibaraki

Police in Toride, Ibaraki Prefecture, said Thursday they are questioning a 36-year-old man over an incident on Wednesday morning in which a 47-year-old man was shot in the calf by an arrow from a crossbow as he was riding his bike home.

Police said the suspect, who is unemployed, was arrested Wednesday afternoon for assaulting a 58-year-old man last month. A search of his home Wednesday night turned up a crossbow and six arrows exactly like the one that hit the cyclist, Fuji TV quoted police as saying.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. Wednesday. The victim was riding his bicycle home from Toride Station when his right calf was pierced by an arrow fired from a crossbow, Fuji reported.

The man said a white sedan passed him slowly just before he felt the pain of the arrow. He was able to make it home where his wife called police. His injury will take about two weeks to heal, a hospital spokesperson said.

The arrow was 40 cms long and 8 mm in diameter, police said.

Police said crossbows are not covered under the Firearm and Sword Possession Control Law and are often sold online, making it difficult to track who is buying them.

but I am a fan of freedom.

Me too. Like, for example, the freedom to know I can ride my bike home safely and not be shot by a lunatic with a crossbow.

The truth of the matter is that you don't need metal knives, plastic knives can cut most food good enough. Cooking food at its most basic level just requires a heat source, it does not require cutting instruments. If we are to include preparation of food then to answer Nessie's question would be anything that requires meat seeing as you need to kill the animal and crossbows can be quite effective at killing a wide range of animals and the tip of the bolt can be used as a cutting instrument.....

Streeeeeetch?!

Such dangerous items should not be sold . The man is lucky to hav survived , because it could hav hit any vital organ . Let's keep the good name of Japan's safety .

Apparently the tip of the bolt/arrow went right through his leg and out the other side.

As an avid cook, I would like you to share your recipes for cooking using a crossbow.

You don't need a metal knife to cook food, you can use plastic knives, anyways all you need to cook food is a heat source.

There is a high probability that the nanny state is going to ban crossbows because of this one isolated incident. I am not a fan of free-for-all weapons possession, but I am a fan of freedom. In the recent past, the government also banned knives over a certain length, with an apparent exception for kitchen cutlery, and over-night made perhaps millions of innocent people into criminals.

Don't crossbows fire bolts and not arrows?

The chances were that he was making his way through to his home on a wing and a prayer pedaling in severe pain. Um. He's got some guts making it home in any way with the arrow stuck into his calf. Well done!

And they were already knee-jerk over airsoft guns.

Fact is, this isn't America and isn't ever likely to be like that. Japanese people are generally not murderous and deal fine with regulations on weapons. So I am in no way in favor of a ban on crossbows just because this headcase used one to attack somebody.

Bear in mind that women are still being regularly slashed with knifes, but how many crossbow incidents do you know of? The government has better things to do.

I really wonder what the reasoning for allowing crossbows is. I seriously doubt they are legal for hunting, and there's a very limited choice of shooting ranges in Tokyo, unless you join the batting crowd

Yeah, crossbows are legal and some of the gas powered air-soft guns, which are aslo legal, are powerful enough to pierce skin and do serious damage. This guy is obviously a loon. Let's hope he is charged with attempted murder and removed from society for a very long time.

So crossbows are legal? What is going on in the minds of some people? The Japanese should come up with a new word for "unemployed" people like this who SNAP and commit violent acts against others. My wife recommends "Abe-children-side-effect"
