the dead guy was a Yamaguchi-Gumi branch gang member

And Blacklabel wishes he'd had a gun.

Pretty safe bet this is mob related. Ordinary citizens in Japan do not have guns, the gangsters do.

On the TV news they are now reporting that the dead guy was a Yamaguchi-Gumi branch gang member, and the gun used was allegedly a 'Kenju' 拳銃 pistol or hand gun.

Like if they passed a law saying you can’t lock your door because it illegally prevents others from entering?

What? People are already prevented from entering. Breaking and entering is a crime, and like gun violence it still occurs, but there shouldn't be laws against it because they don't prevent 100% of that crime? Silly argument. Should we get rid of red lights because people sometimes drive through them?

Which of these laws are ones that prevent you from protecting yourself from criminals?

I think you have that one backwards.

Like if they passed a law saying you can’t lock your door because it illegally prevents others from entering?

First they'd have to make entering someone else's property legal. Like killing someone else with a gun, it's not.

Here, the law doesn't allow individuals to carry a gun for purposes of self defense. And as the stats show (much as you'd like to dismiss them - which isn't really an argument by the way) when compared to a place that does, it's an effective measure.

Re Gunma gunman gone to ground.

The perp knows the cops will come down on him like a ton of bricks. Just a question of time now.

Japan has laws about a lot of things, but people still break them. Should Japan just have no laws?

The phrase “country wide stats don’t matter if i am the one it happens to”, comes to mind.

im quite sure when confronted with a man with a gun the dead guy was comforted by your Japan vs USA stats. and relieved tgat there are gun laws to prohibit him from having what the other guy used to kill him.

The phrase 'shoot yourself in the foot' comes to mind....)

Not clear from the article whether this was a pistol, rifle or shotgun. It mentions head and stomach injuries, and both 'multiple' and 'two' shots which could be two plus echoes(?). The Yakuza would probably use the most illegal, i.e. a pistol of some kind, as a point of pride, although a semi-automatic rifle was used in Kyoto recently.

I guess this is news precisely because of its eyebrow-raising rarity in Japan, indicating some reason strong and deep enough for someone to willingly step way outside the law.

But Japan has strict gun control, how can this be?

Its next to impossible for average people to aquire firearms in Japan.

Nonsense. I know many foreigners who have guns here, myself included. Stop posting this nonsense.

Guns can be bought in Japan, they can be bought for sport and hunting legally, for example there is a gun shop openly selling firearms in the middle of Shibuya, you need permit etc to purchase from them though. But all this talk that people cant buy guns in Japan etc is rubbish.

There are also numerous gun clubs around Kanto too.

But Hand Guns are very restricted.

maybe just maybe laws don’t prevent criminals from committing crimes?

Gunshot? I thought guns were highly regulated in Japan.

The all or nothing, A or Z argument, 'if you can't eliminate all gun murders then do nothing', the no middle ground argument, an argument intended to stifle discussion. Usually made by partisan extremists for whom the notion of mitigating measures is alien.

Often they for some twisted reason use auto deaths in comparison. An A or Z argument would be 'if you can't eliminate all auto accident fatalities, do nothing, no laws'. SMH

I'm grateful I live in Japan where gun murders are so rare, thanks to tough gun laws.

One man had a gun and the guy who didn’t is dead. Food for thought.

Firearm related deaths in Japan : 0.06 per 100,000 of population

Firearm related deaths in USA : 12.21 per 100,000 of population

Food for thought. indeed.

@Seth M - Its next to impossible for average people to aquire firearms in Japan.

Average people don't want guns. However, as stated above, guns can be and are illegally imported into Japan. They can be obtained through nefarious sources that are not necessarily Yakuza related.

Its next to impossible for average people to aquire firearms in Japan. And Yakuza don't kill innocent people. That's the code they abide by and tacit agreement between them and the government to maintain their 'legal' status.

I thought guns were highly regulated in Japan.

How many people were shot in the US in the past .... What, 6 hours?

More than in Japan the entirety of 2019.

Gunshot? I thought guns were highly regulated in Japan.

Criminals usually don't obtain guns legally...

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Absolutely.

The yakuza remain entrenched very deeply in Japanese society (i.e. the guest list for the hanami party which Abe disposed of), and will continue to fight over turf as long as they are.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I wouldn't be so quick to conclude it's a Yakuza killing. There are plenty of other psychopathic nutters out there without Yakuza connections. It could be anything from an unpaid loan, a love triangle or maybe just a random "I just wanted to kill someone" although, the latter seems unlikely.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

There were several yakuza shootings last year including a double murder in Kabukicho, a double murder in Kobe, a murder in a shopping centre in Hyogo and a shooting in an izakaya in Tochigi. This latest shooting sounds like it could be connected to the latter event.

"Gunma" gun yes and a suspect is on the loose

a man's angry voice. a man's angry face, a man's angry stare, see a lot, these days on the streets day and night wondering if something is about to pop off, and get cracking.

Highly regulated does not mean banned. Why would a gunshot surprise you in a country where citizens can own and posses firearms under stringent rules?
