A man was arrested in Nakatosa, Kochi Prefecture, on Wednesday night after he smashed another man's front door with a sledgehammer in a case of mistaken identity, police said Thursday.
The 69-year-old man allegedly had a long-standing disagreement with a different man living in the same town. According to police, at around 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday, the suspect left home carrying a meter-long sledgehammer and selected a house based on the nameplate outside. He allegedly smashed the aluminum frame of a sliding door before seeing the 59-year-old owner's face and fleeing the scene.
The owner of the damaged property said he had a passing acquaintance with the accused man and contacted the police. Police visited the man's home around 30 minutes later and arrested him. During police questioning, the man was quoted as saying, "I got the wrong house."© Compiled from news reports
