Man smashes wrong door in case of mistaken identity

A man was arrested in Nakatosa, Kochi Prefecture, on Wednesday night after he smashed another man's front door with a sledgehammer in a case of mistaken identity, police said Thursday.

The 69-year-old man allegedly had a long-standing disagreement with a different man living in the same town. According to police, at around 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday, the suspect left home carrying a meter-long sledgehammer and selected a house based on the nameplate outside. He allegedly smashed the aluminum frame of a sliding door before seeing the 59-year-old owner's face and fleeing the scene.

The owner of the damaged property said he had a passing acquaintance with the accused man and contacted the police. Police visited the man's home around 30 minutes later and arrested him. During police questioning, the man was quoted as saying, "I got the wrong house."

This is something we can perhaps all relate to. In my case it was 2 am, sledgehammer in hand, ready to roll. From somewhere a little birdie told me 'Is that the radical for hand 手 on the left? Oops! It should be the one for water 水.' As a result I was spared something that could have been immensely embarrassing. Check those kanji!

Most likely the name and Kanji were both the same....there are mnay people who share the same name and Kanji in Japan.....probably a Koboyashi or Suzuki...

Be so funny to see the guy with the sledgehammer: Whack, whack, (door opens) "iya......machigaetta....jya ne" (runs home)

69 and swinging a sledge hammer... he is pretty good shape I say. Now pay for the door.

I spent two years in Kochi City. Anyone who's awake at 11:45 is very likely to have had a skinful. It's not exactly the city that never sleeps, but they can shift some stuff down there.

If I had a hammer...

Not so funny when you are on the receiving end of some sad nutter whose rage has blinded them to common sense.

Someone through a cement block through my windshield out of mistaken identity. He worked on Zama and was arrested, had his ID taken away and put under house arrest. When I went to see him about making restitution, this sorry man had the nerve to ask me to go get him a few six packs of beer. A bigger loser than the sledge hammer old man. Triple fail
