Man stabbed after umbrella altercation on Tokyo street

A 28-year-old man has been arrested in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed a male pedestrian who poked him with an umbrella.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 6:30 a.m. in the Hyakunincho area of Shinjuku Ward. Fuji TV reported that the suspect, Noriyuki Watanabe, stabbed a 31-year-old company employee several times in the chest and back with a knife with a 15-cm-long blade. The victim sustained injuries requiring one month to heal, police said.

Witnesses said they heard one man yelling at the other as he walked away.

Watanabe, who works in a manga cafe, has denied the charge and was quoted by police as saying he doesn't remember anything about the alleged attack. Police said he was identified from his bicycle left at the scene and street surveillance camera footage.

Doesn't remember anything but went about his daily business with a knife tucked in his pants???

Like peeling apples do you?

The famous quote "I don't remember anything about the incident". At least it worked for many cases. Put him behind bars for a good time.

Dude was a ticking timebomb and was probably ready to stab anyone if he was carrying a knife.

Surprised IS haven't claimed responsibility.

Ah, the "I don't remember anything" excuse. May have worked if not for those gosh darned cameras!

Actually, good on him! Some salarymen at 30s can get extremely rude and obnoxious , very disrespectful towards people that dont wear suites. It clearly says who provoked the attack...

You think stabbing someone repeatedly is perfectly justifiable for getting poked with an umbrella? Are you insane?

Your comment, along with the assailant's motives for attacking the man are more demonstrative of stunted emotional growth than any sort of perceived class warfare or lack of so-called respect.

15 cm blade is a pretty impressive knife, and illegal too. Not something you expect people to carry around with them routinely.

Great excuse there mate, it will surely fool the authorities. Big and tough stabbing a pedestrian, not man enough to admit to it.

Take that!!! Quite a temper on him then.....

"umbrella altercation" I honestly don't think I have ever heard those two words used together. Something new every day on JT.

Clueless-----"Stabbing someone is a vicious and cold hearted act. Never in any circumstances justifiable."

I can think of several scenarios where it would be heroic to stop someone even if you had to use a blade. Why do you think the good guys carry weapons too?

was it intentional?(the guy eho poked the insane dude with the umbrella) or was it by accident? if it was intentional than i couls understand being upset, but stabbing someone? thats ridicules and shouldnt have happened.

he doesn’t remember anything about the alleged attack

He figured that excuse works for so many he thought he'd try it

I've heard that some Japanese otaku (assuming he is one - working in a manga cafe) carry knives for protection because thieves mug them & steal their backpacks full of otaku merch when they're in Akiba. But this guy was in Shinjuku so he just may have some kind of head problems or something...

Sounds like Mr. Watanabe had a lot of pent up anger there.... working at a Manga Cafe might do that. Just shows you... be careful what you do and say... a lot of ticking time bombs in the world.

It's weird that they used his bike registration over camera to identify him.

not really, mentally deficient dude is riding a bicycle which is on the street surveillance camera, he stabs the other dude and runs off leaving the bicycle behind. Rudimentary policing to check the bicycles registration details.

@Jalapeno

Can you avoid jail time if you plead insanity in Japan? Works all the time in the U.S.

Seriously? It almost never works as a defense.

That jogged my memory. Anyone remember Hiram Holliday?

It's weird that they used his bike registration over camera to identify him. It makes one wonder. What exactly are you signing when you register s bicycle?

Alright this whole "I don't remember anything" BS needs to stop. Seriously! You have got to be the stupidest police/authority on the planet to believe that lie every single time there's a crime. It's basically the equivalent to a jedi mind trick. It's become a running spam gag now. And that's sad.

@Jalapeno, " Can you avoid jail time if you plead insanity in Japan? Works all the time in the U.S."

Im not sure but i guess you can avoid jail time if you say you cant remember a thing as its one popular line here.

I'm confused here. 15cm blade, stabbed "several" times in the chest and back BUT only requires ONE MONTH to recover? Only in Japan could this be true. Get stabbed ONCE in the states and you're pretty much a goner.
