A man in his 50s was stabbed in the back after an apparent argument with another commuter at Shibuya station on Monday night.
Police said the stabbing took place at around 6:15 p.m. Witnesses said two men were arguing as they came down an escalator toward the platform at the Fukutoshin subway line, TV Asahi reported. One of the men then stabbed the other in the back and fled, witnesses were quoted as saying.
The subway service was halted for about two hours affecting 26,000 passengers while police sealed off the area. However, the assailant escaped. He is described as being in his 30s and 165 centimeters tall, TV Asahi reported.
The victim remains in a serious condition in hospital, police were quoted as saying.

Sounds like the assailant had gone out to kill... why else would he be carrying a blade?

The attacker was carrying a knife... why would you carry one? A butcher or fishmonger? Possibly. If not then the only reason to carry a knife in a relatively safe country is to attack someone.
Or was he carrying a metal model of Tokyo Tower, had an argument with the other man, who slipped and fell backwards onto the tower model. The owner of the model, so scared of this ran off.

Chances are one guy bumped into the other and didn't say "sumimasen" to the other's satisfaction, or commented on him talking too loudly on a cell phone.
I have zero doubt that IF they catch the guy it will be yet another lame reason like it always is here. The only question is why the guy had the knife to begin with.

Many are assuming he was carrying a knife. The article doesn't say what he was stabbed with. It could have been a spoon or a Parker IM Ballpoint.

Absolutely! Could also have been a chopstick hurriedly extracted from his bento box. Don`t think it was the Parker though...if so, the article would have said he had been "parkered" and not stabbed.

The assailant was a troublemaker to begin with which is why he was carrying a concealed weapon. He is likely the type of person down on life and always getting into fights. He found his opportunity to use it and release his anger, sad dude. Just goes to show you, never turn your back on your opponent.

according to witnesses, he was stabbed with a 30-40 cm blade. punks (chinpira, yakuza wannabes) usually carry concealed blades, that's why my wife always cautions me not to get into fights with these scum. Tokyo is quite peaceful, but if you go to Kyushu, things are much rougher. hope the guy makes it, the morning news said he is in serious condition, but not life-threatening

Or is it that people in Kyushu just don't put up with the BS they see everyday here? Guys taking up seats for their bag, people standing in the middle of the escalator, people stopping right before the ticket gate to look for their tickets... I wish people were a little more rougher so this kind of stupid and selfish behaviour would end.
