A man was stabbed and robbed of 70,000 yen in cash in Tokyo’s Ueno Park on Thursday night.

According to police, the victim, a company employee in his 50s, received a neck wound by a knife-wielding man as he walked in the park at around 8 p.m., Fuji TV reported.

Police said the victim was taken to hospital and that his wound is not life-threatening.

The incident occurred near the rental boats for Shinobazu Pond within the park. The victim told police the attacker, whom he did not know, walked past him, then turned around, pulled out a knife and demanded money.

I fear these kinds of violent muggings will increase. Japan is not the safe haven it was twenty years ago.

@hmdrpnk,

Take a good look around.

How wonderfully Japan, and in particular,Tokyo is safe........there are loads more poor people around nowadays. In fact,I only see either old or poor people with a very few exceptions from the the place I live.I live in East Tokyo and judging by the people's facial expressions things aren't hunky dory any longer.

Wow and sad. Ueno Park. I pass through there every week. Japan is still very much a cash society, despite going 'cashless', so it isn't uncommon to have that much on you. I have carried more than that--and been nervous about it.

Ueno park has increased its homeless population since 5+ yrs ago, and with the kung flu, meth zombies, its crime level has also been noticeable, its not a good place to be even in the day time, a lot of part-time yaks, and yakettes running around too. Also nearby uguisudani apocalypse running in the background with hookers from every asian country, and meth zombies too.

Glad the gentleman is expected to be all right. It is a shock this sort of thing could occur in Japan because it is understood Japan all the way from Wakkanai, Hokkaido, Japan to Naha, Okinawa Japan is one of the safest countries in the world on scale with Taiwan, Singapore and Mainland China.

The low life who committed that horrible act should receive the firing squad no questions asked.

What has this to do with ¥70,000? He would also have been stabbed by that wild animal with carrying any amount under or over those 70,000.

Its News that this is News. In other countries with a large city like Tokyo this would be far behind bigger and more serious crimes happening everyday there. Japan is still safer than just about any other country.

It is no coincidence random, violent crimes are happening like this with increasing frequency. Clearly this is not the same as years before.

The last time I was in Ueno, I sat in the sun, drinking a beer...bring it on scumbag(s).

How often do people walk around in the park at night with ¥70,000 on them?"

In the year 2020 that's not that much cash.

I can hear tubular bells in the background: hey could you help an old shrine sweeper, or i'll bleed U...

Japanese husbands get pocket money from wives. at 50s perhaps 100,000円 per month.

So 70,000円 is about right amount left after lunch, izakaya trip. I hopehis wife would be kind enough to offer a 'loan'

Exactly, and two decades ago a lot of people would walk around with ¥70,000 in their pockets. That is what a cash society is.

Pretty sure crime is directly related to poverty

I’ve walked around with more cash than that on a couple occasions on the way to an ATM. Never got robbed though. Don’t judge the guy just because he had a large amount of cash on him. Pretty common in Japan. Still, a stab in the neck for 70,000 JPY? Get a f***king job!

I am shocked to hear something like that happened here, in Japan, at 8pm in Ueno park ! Very low level of crime is the main reason for me to raise my kids here. We need more CCTV cameras, at least in the cities. You can see how in the past children have disappeared and it's near impossible to trace the perpetrators. Cameras would discourage all sorts of criminal activity, they are an extremely good deterrent.

I suspect he was followed from an ATM machine; once he got to a relatively deserted area, the perp walked past him to ensure no one was coming from up ahead, then turned to confront him.

Don’t stab people in the neck!

Obviously a statement made by someone completely ignorant of Japan. Seventy thousand Yen (NOT Yanki dollars) is mere pocket change, a daily cash float in the Nihon archipelago.

The place is just behind the Hongo campus of our university. Therefore, I can guarantee that it is an isolated incident; Yes, we must remain vigilant even in Tokyo. I think we should not equate crime with poverty.

We can not/must not blame Japan for an isolated incident.@Do the hustle.
