Police in Tokyo’s Toshima Ward have arrested a 38-year-old man for stabbing his father and a security guard after being urged to visit a hospital for mental-related issues.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning at an apartment building near Takadanobaba Station in Tokyo’s Toshima Ward. Fuji TV reported that a resident of the apartment building stabbed a security guard in the neck, leaving him in a critical condition, and seriously injured another 68-year-old man, who was later identified as his father.

Neighbors notified the police, who arrested the man upon arrival at the scene.

According to police, the suspect’s father visited the apartment together with four security guards in an attempt to take his son to a hospital. The guards helped the father open the door by cutting the door chain, letting themselves in.

The suspect has reportedly had mental problems, which the father had been trying to get help for, Fuji TV reported.

The suspect was quoted by police as saying he became enraged by his father attempting to enter his home and that is why he “fought against (him and the guards).” The man also told police that this was the fourth time his father had attempted to enter his home.

The father had also contacted the police a week ago regarding his son’s situation. Police said the son will undergo a psychiatric examination before deciding whether to press charges against him.

I taught a psychiatrist once. She was in a lesson with a pediatrician. At the end of the lesson, the shrink blurted out that when she would smack her daughter, the daughter would ask for more... The pediatrician was beyond stunned.

In my mind, the state of the mental health profession in Japan is ... questionable at best.

Well, it seems his father was right, wasn't he? I guess he will get the mental he needs now.

Wrong approach, father should have told him "i have some problem, can you take me to a hospital..."

If he needs to be forcibly committed, shouldn't this be a job for police? Not some rent-a-cops and otosan?

He did contact the police. They appeared to be wont to make a move. His father obviously knows his son needs the help and good on him and the brave guards for going in to get this guy. Unfortunately they underestimated just how dangerous he would be. I hope the father and the guard recover quickly and the son gets the help he needs.

The bloody keystones could have at least had 1-2 people there just in case WTF! Leaving an old man & rent a cops to try to do this shows another failure for Japans social services!

Hope pops & the security guard recover quickly what a MESS!!

Perhaps the father should have enlisted the help of Police and mental health experts?

Hmm looking like the Father was right then, but surely arriving with 4 lumps aint exactly the best way to go about it. Hope all concerned can make full recoveries be it mental or physical.

If he's shown to be psychologically competent, doesn't he have the right to self defense with his home being broken into and an attempted abduction?
