The show may have some degree of culpability in Kimura-san's demise but ultimately the cast members must bear the burden of negativity or fame.

At least they should explain to the participants that they can expect abuse on social media and ask them if they are prepared for that. Maybe that could have saved Hana.

Heck, if I was taking abuse from mainstream media consumers in the politics section here seriously, I would be suicidial too.

The Japan Today comments are not SNS?

Everyone understands that filming would be edited to fit not-necessarily-flattering narratives. The MCs also had roles in empathizing with or attacking the cast. Yamasato-san was the savage critic who spared no fools.

Seems these days the only reason people are on these platforms is to boost their egos. It goes the other way too.

With all due respect, that's a bit too simplistic. SM platforms are a way to communicate, to post creative content that would otherwise not see the light of day, to generate income and yes, sometimes become a 'star' with millions of followers.

However, if you have your head in a romantic cloud about the reality of all that, you might be in big trouble. Obviously, for whatever psychological and mental health conditions at work, Hana could not blow off her critics. Others on the show who have left it to continue their careers in other ways have made similar criticisms as Hana's mother about the pressures to "act" in certain ways on what purports to be an unscripted show. Others on the show have spoken of their SM accounts blowing up after certain episodes and comments.

Producers should be held accountable for the health--physical and mental--of their content creators. They need to provide a safe working environment--which could very easily include third party monitoring of social media feedback to block harmful, bullying trolls. It wouldn't affect their bottom line on a franchise as popular as Terrace House in all its incarnations.

Sometimes I wish we could go back to the days when whatever happened online was not to be taken so seriously and had almost no repercussions in our "real" lives...

how about going back in time to the days when there was NO online. People actually played outside in the parks, running around

Fighto!

Absolute scum. Lock him up for a minimum 20 years

Lock him up for some stupid messages on the internet? For 20 years? Would you recommend the same for your political opponents in the "World" section of this site?

Absolute scum. Lock him up for a minimum 20 years and a life ban from access to any internet service.

I grew up when such was the norm and thus developed resilience towards online abusers, I guess the younger generation which has grown up practically embedded into the virtual world has a hard time to realize that it is just that, a virtual world...

I never saw the show but it seems a lot of people who appear on these reality type programs have self-confidence issues.

I dont watch these shows either, but you can find the segment of the show that got people so riled up on Youtube. Basically, she scolded the guy who had thrown her expenive pro-wrestling costume in the washing machine and ruined it. And apparently the scolded guy had a fan club. Her reaction was clearly realistic, and I always thought these shows are called "reality show" because they are somewhat "real". Well, apparently not.

A man in his 20s was referred to prosecutors Thursday by Tokyo police for allegedly posting hateful messages on social media against Hana Kimura

He is a creep, but what law exactly did he violate? I do not want to live in a world where we are prosecuted for simply writing messages that are offensive.

Hate to say it but thats the world we live in at the moment. Get off all social media if you cannot take criticism.

Though hateful, malicious and likely from a pathetic sad individual, it’s freedom of speech which seems to be eroding before our very eyes. Pandora’s box is well and truly opened. I’m know it’s a tragedy but Do not use social media unless you can deal with the lows as well as highs.

Facebook No. Twitter No. Instagram No. Stay off social media!

She went from one fake world, wrestling, to another, reality TV...and never realized that she was just an actor playing a part.

I tell my kids that, if they value praise or approval from strangers, that means they will also have to accept hate and criticism from strangers. In the end, the approval of strangers is all meaningless - though it can be a good way to earn money.

Some people can view it with detachment, but a lot of them invest to much of their self-image in what strangers say. Most people grow out of it, but YouTube and reality TV stars are mostly too young to have reached that point.

I never saw the show but it seems a lot of people who appear on these reality type programs have self-confidence issues. Shouldn't the producers be investigated for putting such a vulnerable person in such a vulnerable position?

Anybody who wants a life - get off social media !

Lift your head up from your phone & enjoy the real world
