Man unconscious in hospital after street attack in Sendai

A man was stabbed in his left eye on Monday night, Sendai police said Tuesday. Kunihiko Sugawara, 39, was found bleeding on the road in Wakabayashi Ward by a passer-by around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.

According to police, residents nearby reported hearing an argument outside between 12.30 and 1 a.m., and seeing several people leave the scene in different directions.

Sugawara was found lying on the ground about 20 meters away from his bicycle. After examining his injuries, police believe he was attacked with the pointed end of an instrument like an umbrella. They also believe he was punched in the face.

Sugawara is reported to have left his office in Sendai City at around midnight and was likely on his way home. He did not have his bag, wallet and cell phone when he was found, nor did police find the weapon used in the attack.

The attack took place in a residential area about three kilometers southeast from Sendai station.

Not sure what happened by the way this is worded. A bunch of people heard a fight, and then saw people leaving in different directions. And then a "passer by" saw him bleeding and called the cops?

So the people heard the fight, watched people leave, and then quietly went back inside their homes without a peep, leaving this guy lying there? And then a "passer by" happened across the bleeding guy at 1 AM? Is the way it went down?

And when exactly did the cops examine this guys injuries? While he was still lying in the street bleeding? While the paramedics were working on him?

Just an idea, but how about this sentence:

"Due to the nature of his injuries, the police believe he was struck in the eye with a sharp object, and was apparantly struck in the face"

This is the second time this year someone has been stabbed in the eye with an umbrella. I can't remember where the first attack happened, but the victim was a college student. He got into a staring contest with a guy with an umbrella and...

I know EXACTLY what you mean. And if they ain't trying to poke you in the face they swing the point behind them hoping to stab someone. But this college kid really did get stabbed in the eye for staring at someone. Last I read he was in a coma.

i am always reminded by my husband to be extra careful once outside the house coz there are so many not-so-sane beings out there. Japan is such a beautiful place but they need to educate their people regarding socialization.

There was a road-rage incident a few years back where two guys got out of their cars to yell at each other for something, and one stabbed the other in the eye with an umbrella, killing him.

I agree with MeanRingo. This was a mugging that he wasn't cooperating with, and was attacked as a result. Hope they catch the attackers. Any bets that they were high school-aged?

Did suspect practice 'Mary Poppins,' she was using umbrella for her fun. Why can a person be so arrogant to use sharp object on the other person? Because he is a 'scumbag' and not a man, but behaving like a school tad. Can't he use at least his hands? This scumbag need a shrink, and hope he doesn’t attend clinic with umbrella. Sorry for the victim. But don’t worry justice will give him what he deserve, ‘with a sensible judge.’
