Police are looking for a man who put a plastic bottle in a rubbish bin outside a police box near JR Chigasaki station on Thursday morning, after the bottle was found to contain two liquids which -- when combined -- produce hydrogen sulfide gas.
An officer noticed a foul smell coming from the bin when he returned to the police box at about 4.30 a.m. after patrolling the neighborhood. The bottle, which was upside down with the lid off, contained a light green liquid, and a puddle of brown liquid was found at the bottom of the bin. Analysis later confirmed the gas produced was hydrogen sulfide, which can be lethal if inhaled at higher concentrations.
Police said a security camera recorded footage of a man putting the bottle in the bin, and said that if caught, they may pursue a charge of attempted murder.

Hydrogen sulfide is common enough stuff. It's what makes the smell of feces. Well, almost any sulphur compound is like that. And almost anything in large concentrations is deadly. Attempted murder? That's an extreme charge when it was just a little bottle.

Most Japanese people I have talked to dislike the police, think they are useless and overpaid, and the general consensus is that they are keen to give out a traffic ticket or stop someone from crossing at red light- as long as they don`t have to deal with any nasty criminals. As Japanese police are, after all, Japanese people, it quite an easy stereo-type to accept. There are lots of things that suck about Japan, and lots of great things. I like to hear that other people hate the same things as me.
As far as the attempted murder charge goes, I think the intention is the important thing. If the man beleived he could kill the police with the ags and attempted to do so, then he attempted to murder them. If he simply intended to cause discomfort then he did not attempt to kill them and is not guilty of attempted murder- ALTHOUGH HE WILL PROBABLY BE TORTURED UNTIL HE ADMITS TO SAYING HE INTEDNED TO KILL THEM, FOUND GUILTY IN A KANGAROO COURT, PUT IN JAIL, AND NEVER HEARD FROM AGAIN. 99%- well done.

Actually I think two different people disposed of two different cleaning agents, and the dregs at the bottom got lucky or unlucky one should say. They are wasting there time on this one. I have seen and known of people dumping ammonia into a cleaning compound with chlorine in it. Talk about knock you down. One did it in a cleaning closet, and was lucky the door was open.

I sincerely doubt he was trying to "murder them" if so he would have tossed it directly into the door of the Koban, and he would not have made a stink bomb (which is what it is....its called civil disobediance...making a social comment on the police by planting a stinkbomb by them. If you want to kill them with a gas, take sulfuric battery acid from a car and mix it 30/40/30 as such acid/chlorine bleach/liquid drano or equivilant drain cleaner solution... toss it in a confined space, that would actually kill someone, and not in a pleasant fashion either.
