Around 14 days is generally considered the minimum --not the maximum-- to be safe. There is no maximum

People can continue to be infectious particularly if they still have symptoms

The only way to be sure is to be tested

If indeed patients with symptoms remain contagious longer than asymptomatic ones, quarantine is 10 days after showing first symptoms is enough.

False, a person can continue to be infectious as long as viral replication still continues, hospitalized people can give out positive tests for weeks because they have not defeated the infection. Quarantine for 10 days applies only for people that stopped being symptomatic.

Serious symptoms are enough to suspect sustained viral replication, there is no requirement for the person to be on the ICU to think the virus is still present in his respiratory tract. If the virus is present then he can be contagious until proven otherwise.

Your mistake is thinking that one person can only keep transmitting the disease if he is on the verge of death, that is wrong. The CDC recommends for example up to 20 days of isolation for people with severe symptoms (requiring hospitalization), and negative tests are a requirement for hospital discharge precisely because the patient can still be infected (and infectious) for as long as he has symptoms.

Zaphod-

Shouldn´t Corona be dealt and done with in 14 days?

Are you for real? You really think viruses work to exact time-frames? Seriously?

Throw the book at this reckless sociopath.

The suspect, whose name has been withheld because he was an infectious disease patient

Good job Japan, way to do things the WRONG way.

Put that fool on blast!

@Virusrex wrong.

@Sven Asai wrong

No nickname can entitle you science knowledge about virus by default.

If indeed patients with symptoms remain contagious longer than asymptomatic ones, quarantine is 10 days after showing first symptoms is enough.

This person had serious symptoms, not severe. He could breathe without additional oxygen nor was he in ICU.

His health state was obviously improving.

Again his case was "serious" (a fever only) at the beginning but NOT severe, he could work.

And it made a story just because a member of his family called police (no one calls police after an adult unknown leaving for less a day), NOT the hospital !

Sincerely hope another would-be infected with COVID-19 may not going out of a hospital to drink and such.

Not infectious after 14 days? They found out a current maximum of about 61 to 70 days in living persons. What do you think, why the numbers still rise exponentially worldwide? Exactly, because of your stupid 14 days thinking!

Seesaw

Irresponsible old goat. Ojichans Obachans are ignorant about Covid basically

The article says he is in his 40s. That is not ojisan. Also I doubt he how sick he was seeing that he could take taxis, drive around and go to onsen. Certainly does not look like an ICU case. Why was he still in the hospital at all? Shouldn´t Corona be dealt and done with in 14 days? Sounds like an over-zealous hospital.

Irresponsible old goat. Ojichans Obachans are ignorant about Covid basically. They go to onsen and yak and yak with their friendsas and during their lifestyle before the pandemic

One big reason why they should implement telework, he can work in the hospital if really necessary

"My company's business performance may have gone down if I didn't work,"

If he actually showed up for work then he had endangered his company

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Normally I would be all for not panicking over this disease. But for someone who displayed serious symptoms, he's a complete and utter idiot. Deserves the book thrown at him

8 ( +8 / -0 )

timeon: with this joker arrested, I am quite convinced that the performance of his company will go down.

Not necessarily. If this irresponsible nonsense is indicative of his usual decision-making process, I suspect the company will do reasonably well without him.

"My company's business performance may have gone down if I didn't work," he was quoted

so how exactly would a visit to the local onsen help his business?

with this joker arrested, I am quite convinced that the performance of his company will go down.

Not really news in December is it?

"My company's business performance may have gone down if I didn't work," he was quoted

OK we need to find out which company this was. Was he brainwashed by the company's lack of care about the pandemic, or is he just passing the buck?

If we find out he works for Dentsu, we're not allowed to ask any more questions.

I can only surmise that if he was sick enough to be in hospital, then he was probably running a very high fever and this caused him to be delirious. This is not meant as insult, but as an observation of a very real, medical condition.

High fevers caused serious lapses of judgement that is no fault of the patient. And yes, people with high fevers can still be mobile and appear coherent even when they really are not.

Similar to the guy that found out he was infected and decided to use that information to go bar hopping across aichi.

That guy died, too.

Nature: 1; Freedumb: 0.

Similar to the guy that found out he was infected and decided to use that information to go bar hopping across aichi. What is wrong with these people? They are putting the lives of many people at risk with their negligence.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

I'm puzzled as to why this has taken so long to get into the news, but the man is an utter disgrace.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

It’s idiots like this that will keep the virus alive and well worldwide. Australia set up fines of up to $5,000 for individuals and $20,000 for companies for those who broke quarantine and distancing regulations. It should be no surprise they issued many fines to idiots just like this one.

He was not infectious after 14 days, what is the point ? He was not an issue for anyone.

A person is not infectious after 14 days if he does not have any symptoms, but this person was hospitalized. Someone heavily sick from the infection can still be infectious no matter how long time has passed since the diagnostics. The possibility of spreading is still there.

And it is irrelevant what the spa operator thinks, he was obligated to disinfect his business or risk losing all his clients, something that was a direct consequence of the irresponsibility of the escaped patient.

He was not infectious after 14 days, what is the point ? He was not an issue for anyone.

And the Spa operator thinks none of clients can possibly be infected. You clean regularly and that's it !
