Police in Hiroshima have arrested a 23-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of robbing a convenience store on Aug 5.
According to police, the man pointed a cutter knife at a female store clerk just after 1 a.m. and demanded money, NTV reported. When the clerk did not comply, he stole five packs of cigarettes, put them in a bag and fled.
Police located the man at a shopping center at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday. He was identified after an analysis of surveillance camera footage from the convenience store. He voluntarily accompanied police and later admitted to robbing the convenience store.
When he was detained, the man was carrying the same bag used by the suspect seen on the store's security camera footage. He had only 30 yen on him at the time of his arrest, police said.

Maybe you need to know his personal circumstances before making judgements.

Personal circumstances aside, I’m sure the police, convenience store owners, etc. would be more sympathetic had he stolen food, not cigarettes, and had not brandished a box cutter at the clerk.

Well, but it is also said that with smoking one can suppress feelings of hunger or immediate need for food. lol

I agree with Gaijin you see. Well, if he were desperate he could pinch something but scaring people and making them fearful is inexcusable.

Question was it robbing or stealing. When the clerk refused to hand over money she was robbed in turn he took 5 packs of cigarettes.
When the clerk did not comply, he stole five packs of cigarettes, put them in a bag and fled.
