Police in Ishikari, Hokkaido, have arrested a 46-year-old man for eating and drinking at a bar, knowing he would be unable to pay his bill.
According to police, the man ordered beer, shochu, other drinks and food at an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) between 8:30 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, TBS reported. When he was asked to pay the 12,210 yen bill, the man told staff he had no money on him. The bar called police who arrested the man, a company employee, on suspicion of fraud.
Police said the man, who was intoxicated when they arrived, had no cash or credit cards on him, and that he told them he knew he had no money when he came into the pub but wanted to drink and eat something.

Have some mercy dammit. He was a company employee.

Good to know that he was a company employee, for sure.

Soon to be former-company employee.

So wait, he told the restaurant he had no money, yet they let him eat?
Doesn't that mean it's their fault?
Moderator: "them" refers to the police.

"Police said the man, who was intoxicated when they arrived, had no cash or credit cards on him, and that he told them he knew he had no money when he came into the pub but ..." since he was from a middle class family with lawns in the neighborhood, just wanted to participate in the opportunity economy and have something to eat and drink, and would later pay with some joy. (this is a bit of a joke, have a laugh).
At least he didn't use the "I'm drunk, and don't remember doing it" excuse.

I am kind of surprised the place called the cops.

At least he didn't dine and dash.

they may ask him to wash dishes instead...problem could be solved...

Does that need to be in the crime section ?
At least his name was not released so he will not be fired.

Same thing happened to me, kind of, but I really thought I could pay. Food and drinks and when I went to pay the bill my cards were declined… my ex wife maxed out the cards. No cash because my ex wife took my salary and gave me an allowance of like 2,000 yen a day. I was mortified, really really embarrassing. Luckily the owner knew me and let me pay the next day… maybe if it had not been a place I was a regular at they would have called the police.

I have forgotten my wallet before. But fortunately, the immigrant restauranteur took mercy, even told me to pay it next time. I brought back the money the same day, though.
Work it off? I had a lot of experience working in restaurants and I have never seen that done. If an arrangement to pay isn't agreed, then the police are called.

Amazing that this makes the news in Japan. This is a daily occurrence at pretty much every restaurant in America.

Is it a slow news day

Weird case.
Criminals in Japan seem often to do this incredibly honest act of waiting for the police and then admitting everything.
Seems that it could have been worked out amicably if the man had showed contrition and agreed to pay later. That said, with no ID, it would take incredible trust in the part of the restaurant.
Going into a place and ordering food and drinks knowing that he had no way to pay was outright audacious. If I were the restaurant manager, I might show mercy on someone genuinely mortified at having forgotten his wallet. “I don’t have cash or cards and wanted to eat anyway” is blood-boiling enough to prompt most people to call the cops.
If the guy had wanted to eat for free, though, why didn’t he just run? Staying until the cops come suggests that a person wants to be honest on some level. Unless the restaurant had some way to trace the man, he could have gone to the toilet, detoured out the door, and never been caught.

He was a kind ,an doing this before Tuesday when 3000 prices go up. He saved himself, the izakaya, and the police a lot of money. Hoping there will be lenience on this poor soul.
