Man with 'toy gun' robs convenience stores in Tokyo

A man holding what appeared to be a toy gun robbed a convenience store in Tokyo’s Suginami Ward on Sunday morning. Police believe the same man robbed two other convenience stores during the early morning hours.

According to police, the man, wearing a black business suit and sunglasses, entered a FamilyMart store at around 4 a.m. and threatened the clerk with a gun, Fuji TV reported. He told the clerk it was a Walther P38. However, after examining the store surveillance camera footage, police said it appeared to be a toy gun.

The man demanded the clerk empty and cash register. He took 100,000 yen and fled on a bicycle.

Police said that about five minutes earlier, the same man robbed another convenience store about 200 meters away. He is also believed to have robbed a convenience store in Nishi-Shinjuku at around 12:30 a.m. Surveillance camera footage showed the suspect using the same gun-like object in those robberies, too.

Nobody was hurt in the three robberies.

He told the clerk it was a Walther P38.

Who robs someone AND tells them what they are running them with?

"Hey! Gimme all of your money or I'll harm you with this stainless steel silver Desert Eagle, customized with a varnished oak wood handle for a more sturdy grip. The hammer is reinforced with titanium with less recoil. It is also light weight for discreet carrying! Hurry up with that money!"

I don't care about guns. I am just making up this description as to not get removed

He took 100,000 yen and fled on a bicycle.

Solid escape plan! (sarcasm)

So the man, was wearing a blue business suit and sunglasses, Don't know his situation in life that is causing him to rob convenience stores but at least he's doing it in style - wears a suit & sunglasses to rob several stores. Now that cools.... Walther P38 now that's a rare gun I wonder if he meant a  Walter Interarms- PPK, 380.

Walther P38 = Megatron

Did he rob the stores with a Megatron Transforming gun?

I'm with the staff on this. It has to be safety first.

It's slightly offtopic, but this man has threatened people with a conventionally non-threatening object. I'm sure he will be dealt with by the law in a similar way as whether it was a knife or a real gun. I say this because we have heard recently that the authorities are struggling to appropriately prosecute road rage, which also involves threatening people with a conventionally non-threatening object.

Ahh,. In case Foreign folks here didn'T know, if you ask Japanese around 40's about gun Walther P38, they say a famous cartoon, Lupin the 3rd, and the lyrics in its ending song in 1971 says it.

This song brings me back a lot of memory when I was child..

Replica guns should be banned.

And if it "appeared to be a toy gun", why did the cashier pay up?

It only appeared to be a toy gun after analysis of the security cam footage.

Besides if you were the cashier would you take the risk considering the measly wages they pay you ?

Strange writing. To the victim, obviously, it "appeared" to be a real gun.

Doesn't matter if the gun is real or not. If you are a cashier and someone comes in and demands all the cash holding nothing but a fruit loop, you hand it over. The boss's money is not worth the risk the robber might be hiding a real weapon or just apt to go outrageously violent. Don't die like the young man who chased a robber out of the store and hung on to his car. Just fork it over and call the cops when its safe.
