A man and a woman were slashed in a pub in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, on Sunday night.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bikkuri Gyoten pub. Police said a male customer slashed the 68-year-old woman who operates the pub and a 71-year-old male customer and then fled.

Both victims sustained wounds to their neck and stomach and are in a serious condition in hospital, police said Monday. Police said there was no one else in the pub at the time.

The assailant is described as being in his late 40s or early 50s, of thin build and with short hair.

Looks like alot of people are carrying knives.

Not really. Japan has strong laws against carrying knives as part of the swords and firearms laws. Japanese people are law-abiding, and very few people are carrying knives.

The crime rate may be decreasing overall, but these types of random violent crime are surely rising.

No, they are not.

Safety is no longer a guarantee in Japan

Safety has never been a guarantee anywhere, at any time, throughout human existence, and particularly never been a guarantee in Japan's history. When specifically are you making this supposed comparison with?

@ old man. Safety has never been a "guarantee" anywhere. Crime happens sometime. Please cite any statistic to show "random violent crime is rising" in Japan. Oh thats right you cant.

A suspect has been arrested -- a 64-year old realtor whom lived in the same neighbourhood. He was upset because he felt the pub's prices were too expensive.

Wasn't another person shot? Pubs are dangerous places these days.

Instead of blaming a knife or a gun or a place, how about blaming the assailants?

Pubs are only as dangerous as the people in them. That goes for all places.

The crime rate may be decreasing overall, but these types of random violent crime are surely rising. Safety is no longer a guarantee in Japan. And the only way to convince the doubters is a foreigner being victimized by such random violent acts

Looks like alot of people are carrying knives. Which is very scary because as a motorist one could easily get in trouble with a sicko.

shootings, stabbings, slashings, arson murders - this is japan now.

This is most countries now, then and throughout history.

Just happens less here and therefore causes more shock.

Japanese Izakaya are extremely safe places. Violence is so uncommon its almost unheard of. Only danger is drinking too much! Some "Snack" and "Hostess Bars" are rather less safe at times.

In many if not most of these cases, there was always some involvement, be it a dispute/argument, beforehand.

In Japan? Not at all!

Aye. All those who think Japanese pubs are dangerous have been living a somewhat cosseted existence.

Outside of Japan, I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.

Of course these isolated attacks are of concern, especially for the owners and victims, but overall, this is not a massive, sudden outbreak of violence engulfing the country.

I feel like many people are walking around looking for trouble these days. To attack a 68 year old woman and a 71 year old man. Uncalled for.
