Men connected to Roppongi club murder flee Japan

Police in Tokyo said Saturday that several of the men wanted for questioning in connection with a Roppongi nightclub murder earlier this month, left Japan shortly after the incident.

On Sept 2, a gang of 10 men wearing ski masks came into the club Flower at about 3:40 a.m. Some were brandishing metal bats and attacked a 31-year-old man who was drinking with friends.

The attack lasted about 1-2 minutes, witnesses said. The gang left immediately after the assault and got away in two vehicles, police said. The victim, who was identified as Ryosuke Fujimoto, was taken to hospital with severe head injuries, but was pronounced dead.

Surveillance camera footage showed members of the gang getting out of their vehicles before entering the club and showed the vehicles leaving after the attack.

Police this week announced that several of the men they had planned to question in connection with the incident left Japan, one after another, in the days following the murder, TV Asahi reported.

Read some where that the victim had borrowed some money from folks you should never borrow from and he never paid it back.

(Sigh) Once again, the fleetfooted police have allowed suspects to run away, nay, TRICKLE away from their grasp.

1 ( +9 / -7 )

There's a lot the media and police are not saying. For example, the ones left behind are under surveillance, also the ones overseas are under surveillance at their hotels. They are expected to have their credit cards and bank accounts shut down by the end of the week. They are just waiting for the court orders and a coordinated international law enforcement apprehension. It's all in the cards already. Also, the group they are affiliated with is under survalliance also due to other small crimes. They will all be behind bars by the end of next month. Some escaped to places that may be hard to capture at the moment but their cash is bound to run out really soon. Anyway, I'm happy to see they are being sought for.

That guy must have borrowed quite a bit of money to have 10 guys take bats to him.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

According to an underground source, about half a million yen was borrowed to this mans name. Again, I would like to emphasize that borrowing large amounts of cash from people who will take you and make of you an example is not my idea of a legal loan. Even some legal loans make a living nightmare on your finances. Stay away from those instant money lenders and loan sharks. They are friendly at the beginning but seem to tighten their courtesies every time you pay an installment. Motto reads "smile first, beat later"

Keystones at their finest..

What did I say, that the JCops will never catch a single one of them unless they turn themselves in...

Thank your lucky stars that Japan is a safe country, because if your life depended on JCops, you might as well leave the country.

NYPD or LAPD would have had these guys, if not all of them, 75% in custody within a week.

Oh, they didn't even bother to mention if they put out an interpol request for pick up, or arrest... You know Jcops, since you seem to know only that they flew the country, you can have them arrested or detained in the country that they flew to... Or because they are yakuza, you're going to just sweep it under the rug. As always... Great Job!

That's it? That amount sounds like a broken arm or leg plus an additional 15% or so added to the overall total.

I meant to say half a million dollars.... sorry typO O_o

0 ( +1 / -1 )

How did they know it was them? Did they wear the ski masks to the airport?...

12 ( +15 / -4 )

Sketchy information to say the least.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

My guess is that these criminals are already back in LA?? Hawaii??

-7 ( +1 / -7 )

Why didn't they say where they fled to? Not enough information in the article.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@resurfaced

Is this a joke or what? Your posts sound like some kind of made for TV drama that never got aired. 5, or 6 grand gets you killed? No way, not even for here.

When's the next episode?

0 ( +4 / -4 )

I'll shoot for Thailand or Philippines. Japanese passports are a huge business there too. Usually the last stop in Asia. Hong Kong, Singapore to risky and any western nation with good Interpol ties....forget it. I am sure this gang already has the warrants issued and expect them on Interpol site soon... Cheers aad Resurfaced..good comment.

TokyoGasSEP. 30, 2012 - 08:10AM JST That guy must have borrowed quite a bit of money to have 10 guys take bats to him.

Dude borrowed $ for one of his new yakiniku joints, never paid the cach back. Instead balled in a Lexus and lived it well.

Rule #1: Never borrow money

Rule #2: Never ever borrow money

Rule #3; Follow rules #1 and #2

Rule #4: If you really have to borrow money, make sure you pay it back respectfully, and don't snub the lender by driving around the city balling in a high grade European model.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Jcop #1: OK, boss, I got their plates. Should we pick them up?

Jcop #2 Eto,,,it's a little dangerous. Those people scare me.

Jcop #1 What should we do?

Jcop#2 I've got it! Let them leave the country, then we can have THEIR cops pick 'em up!

Jcop#1 Brilliant! So, back to reading manga?

Jcop #2 Yep!

There is something missing from this story. If these men were wanted for questioning by police, why not stop them at ports of disembarkation?

@Kapuna

There is something missing from this story. If these men were wanted for questioning by police, why not stop them at ports of disembarkation?

You see, when yk are involved, the JCops will settle for any reason (no matter how flimsy) to close the books on this case., and since Japan actually has a statute of limitations on Murder (unheard of in any other civilized country, btw I'm not implying that jp is civilized) They will go, "Oh, Ok, they're gone, We Can't do anything Now, Case Closed!" and after 10 years (or 15, what-ever the statute on murder is, I think 10 yrs) they can return to Japan, and have no possibility of facing any charges. See how that works...

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

@ChinaSailor

and since Japan actually has a statute of limitations on Murder (unheard of in any other civilized country, btw I'm not implying that jp is civilized

(May 21, 2010) The Diet, Japan's legislature, amended the country's Criminal Procedure Law to abolish the statute of limitations for murder and other crimes that result in the deaths of persons. The amendments became effective on April 28, 2010, the day after the Law to Amend the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Law was promulgated (Law No. 26 of 2010). The new Law is applied to cases in which the statute of limitations had not run out as of its effective date, even if the crime was committed before the new Law's enactment. (Criminal Procedure Law, Law No. 131 of 1948, amended by Law No. 26, Attached Provisions, art. 3.)

Probie above asks: How did they know it was them? Did they wear the ski masks to the airport?...

The film from the survellience camera that got them entering the club in Roppongi showed that three or four of the bashers didn't have their masks covering their face at the time ... so the police have clear views of several faces to work with. Guess the cops just didn't alert immigration officials at airports and international ferries to be on the alert for the thugs. So they merely fled the country easily ...

resurfaced-

sources?

One half a million US, even, is a lot not only for that kind of beating, but for the bother of risking 10 guys to do it and then paying for them to fly to other countries and hide out. What a waste of time, money, energy, resources, and ppl. Just get one guy to break his leg, then a few wks later an arm, maybe beat him w/in an inch of his life, but kill? Using ten guys to do it?

It sounds like there was much more money/ maybe partner-business on the table and/or a big personal grudge, to me. No?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Say hey Lowly. Perhaps other dudes borrowed money from this syndicate, too. So the lesson is, pay up or else what happened to Ryosuke Fujimoto might happen to you too.

Professional money loaners are not really nice guys ...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The reason why the suspects fled abroad -- and this is a major omission on the part of the story -- is that they are believed to be of mixed Japanese-Chinese ancestry, members of the extended families of Japanese "war orphans" who were abandoned in China in 1945 an repatriated many years later. When they came here they brought members of their families, and some of the 2nd or 3rd generations have gravitated to crime, including murder for pay. When JT ran a story several weeks ago in which a Keio professor suggested at least some of the perps were foreign posters in here scoffed at the notion, but more and more data is surfacing that he was at least partially correct.

resurfaced:

" I meant to say half a million dollars.... sorry typO O_o "

That would make sense. 50 million yen is not something you´d want to owe shady characters I suspected something like this right off the bat.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Seriously some of you watch tooooo much dang TV and movies, real life is not like what you see on CSI Miami.

First thing to point out is that the suspects left Japan in the days immediately after the event. In the days immediately after the event, the police did not know who the suspects were to begin with, it was still an investigation.

So for those who think the police just let them get away, they didn't know who they were to begin with, crimes are not solved in 45 minutes like you see on TV!

It takes time to research, investigate, review the tape, track down who's on the tape, interview witnesses, by the time the police came up with a list of suspects, the suspects had already left (as mentioned by the article within days after the incident, when it was still under investigation).

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Lowly, it was "about half a million yen" not dollars. Not a huge sum, but Tokyogas, in one respect you are mistaken; it takes very little to hire 10 boys with bats to beat someone up. Yen 10,000 each is plenty. I never pay more than that...;-)

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Well, what was it, yen or dollars?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

That's what they get for putting conviction rates above justice... They always wait until the last moment to actually arrest, except when targeting foreigners. The fact these people fled means they had Japanese passports

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

, We Can't do anything Now, Case Closed!" and after 10 years (or 15, what-ever the statute on murder is, I think 10 yrs) they can return to Japan, and have no possibility of facing any charges

The clock on the statute of limitations stops as soon as you leave the country and starts again when you re-enter.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

The fact these people fled means they had Japanese passports

You mean a person can only leave Japan with a Japanese passport?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

billyshears:

" You mean a person can only leave Japan with a Japanese passport? "

If you are Japanese person or have dual nationalty, yes.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Japanese police inform the yakuza whenever they are about to do something with regards to them, more than likely giving them time to leave Japan and the cops a free holiday to go play Miami Vice in another country on the tax payers money. These guys wont be charged and they will be free.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

The police fell down on the job once again!! If they wanted these men for questioning they should have flagged their passports so they would have been stopped at the airport!! GEE what a thought!!!!

Cop A: What do you think we should do?

Cop B: I don't know I really want to talk to them and ask them why they actully beat this guy for, maybe he dated the leaders girlfriend

Cop A: you think it is so easy ??

Cop B: sure why not? if they wanted him to pay money he cannot pay if he is dead, right??

Cop A: well we need to talk to them....

Cop B: do you think they will leave Japan??

Cop A: No... They can walk in front of a Koban and our men would not even notice, no sir they will stay here...

Cop B: Ok... then I guess we don' t need to flag their passports.

Cop A: No, to much work.... Time goes by...

Cop A: Damn it they actually left!!

Cop B: Yeah what do we do now???

Cop A: I do not know.... we could look for something new to look busy on...

Cop B: OK I will go stand out side and daydream and look like I am watching traffic...

Cop A: Ok..... I will try to find something to look busy on in here.... Perhaps I will clean the floor ir walk through the station and bother a gaijin for their Gaijin card...

Really!!!!!!!!!! Another blunder by the J cops!! Wow!!

Surprised???? NO WAY!!!!

Really? Then tell me how I can leave Japan with an American passport?

Yubaru / I know what you mean but I don't mean to frustrate you with my half finished comments. I would have to blame my iPad for that. Nonetheless, I always hope to comment as honest as possible. If you have any more complaints feel free to post them, I'll read them and get back to you as soon as I can. Cheers.

So now he is murdered, he cannot return the money owed for sure, right?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

m6bob:

" So now he is murdered, he cannot return the money owed for sure, right? "

Correct, but all the other potential defaulters of this loan business will now be more "motivated" to pay up. Or do you think he was their only customer?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

gaijinfo@9:44AM - LOL.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sorry, but I can't give the police any credit on this. Since they tend to inform the yakuza or businesses a week in advance that they plan to investigate, they no doubt did so here, and in return for more or less turning a blind eye on the people responsible fleeing the country (they could have easily put out names at airports, no?) they got the details after the fact.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

If they can identify the men by name, it's possible that China will allow them to be extradited back to Japan to stand trial. Fleeing abroad is no longer the free pass it once was, since extradition treaties for certain crimes are in place. There were some murders by Chinese in Kyushu a number of years ago, and the Chinese authorities agreed to extradition of the wanted criminals, who I recall, were sentenced to death.

Once again, the fleetfooted police have allowed suspects to run away, nay, TRICKLE away from their grasp.

The suspects were wearing ski-masks. What were the police supposed to do - detain every adult male under the age of 60 that tried to leave the country? They would have almost certainly identified suspects at some point after the event, ran checks and then found some had already left the country.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Half a million yen? That's like.. $6,000...? Regardless of the amount.. we should never harm anyone... $6,000 grand? 10 guys... murdered and left the country for $6,000? That's not even good business on the lenders side either..

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I laugh at all the people living behind Rose colored glasses! If indeed this man borrowed money from a Crime Syndicate and refused to repay..... and then had the audacity to be out partying in Roppongi in plain sight.... well then guess what. It would be so nice if this stuff never happened I know but the grim reality is.... it happens every day, and probably every hour somewhere in the world. These elements of the Human Race will always be present.... the trick is to try to keep it down as much as possible. In Japan its rare for criminal elements to take a person's life.... but every once in awhile.... it may be necessary to send a signal.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

considering the japanese police ties to organized crime, not surprising that they haven't caught them yet.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Lowly- Its not about the money, its about sending a message (that old line)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Rumor in Roppongi has it they may have murdered the wrong guy. The guy seems to have had no issues with neither the Kanto Rengo group nor the Yamaguchi clan both of whom are seemingly suspected as the possible group behind the crime.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There is a possibility that the attackers were not Japanese.

Absolute nonsense.

Jcop#1:...back to manga. Jcop#2: yep! Jcop#1: Got any new up skirt photos? Jcop#2: Maybe this evening.
