Where on earth are these people boarding planes to Japan where there are no metal detectors? They could be carrying anything...?

Misconception, all airports in Japan have metal detectors, however they are typically the type that scan for and detect magnetic metals. Non-metallic metals are typically not "found". They are installing a different type of metal detector that is electronic and can detect even small amounts of non-metallic metals, such as gold.

@expat: That actually requires logical thinking.

Just learned something from Yubaru! Gold does not set off metal detectors, (hey, thanks!) or at least airport metal detectors which are not dialed to detect gold. A precious metal, Gold is non-metallic? Non-ferric?

(I was talking about the pre-boarding ones in SK, Hong Kong etc., though, not those in Japan.)

No buyers mean no smugglers. That simple.

@nandakandamanda

There is no reason for the security staff at the departing airport to stop people from boarding a plane with gold, it's perfectly legal. The crime is committed when they fail to declare and pay tax in Japan, not when they get on the plane.

Just tax the shops.
