Minivan driver arrested after wild ride, injuring 6 pedestrians in Osaka

24 Comments

Police on Tuesday arrested the 32-year-old driver of a minivan after he drove wildly around a block in Osaka's Nishinari Ward, injuring six people.

According to police, the mayhem started at around 1:40 p.m. when the minivan drove through a red light. It hit a bicycle, then the front of a shop, TV Asahi reported. Video footage showed the minivan continuing on, with its front bumper off and a front tire punctured.

Six people were injured along the way before the minivan finally came to a stop after crashing into a truck, police said.

the police said there was no alcohol or drugs involved. they threatened him with their pistols, but he still didn't stop. after crushing into the truck, he went to the police, kneeled down and apologized. it doesn't get stranger than that, but let's ot forget we're talking about Osaka

Once the guy hit the bike after speeding through a red he probably just panicked and tried to get away. I doubt it had anything to do with crystal meth or anything like that. Just a moron who was too afraid to live up to what he'd done, even though he'll have to live up to worse, now.

they showed some footage this morning, he went through a tiny alleyway with a minivan?

Guy needs a beating.

This is Osaka, where you can get anything to get high. If you can't find it in Osaka, then you don't have it in JP. My bet is that he was high as a kite on met.

The driver?

32 huh ?

So by Japanese law, not a minor then. Why doesn't the article name the culprit....is he some big industrialist's , or politician's son ?

Please run more information after the investigation by the police. Right now it's all speculation as to why he went nuts and drove into people.

In japan he qualifies as a skillful driving instructor!

Was he already being chased by police when he ran the red light or did the police chase start after he ran the red light?

If you think Japan has the world's worst drivers then you have never been to China and most other Asian countries, Mexico, Russia or the Middle East. Try driving in Cairo or Tehran if you are feeling brave.

Good thing no one was killed but still very bad.

Just saw it on tv (again). The cops say he was on drugs at the time he rammed through those people.

The reasons for these incidents are never disclosed....why not?

Why would a tabloid website do that?

The actual truth is not nearly as interesting as the spin and innuendo that is whipped up initially.

People come here for an escape from reality.

Sorry Harry, people in Mexico have more common sense than many here in Japan, we may not have as much $$$ as Japan but we make up for it with good humor and common sense.

Actually South Korea, CHina, Thailand also quite crazy drivers, but hey, nobody is perfect, right??

@CrazyJoe - Great question.

Was he already being chased by police when he ran the red light or did the police chase start after he ran the red light?

Does anyone know about this? We had a big debate on another story about the guy who killed some lady after the police chased him. He was driving crazy anyway. I said it is all his fault and the police were not at fault, but others felt it was the police's fault. So, I really want to know how many people were struck before and after the police started chasing him.

@Miatake -

Wlecome to Japan: home of the world's worst drivers.

Not even close. I drive everyday and ride a motorcycle and if anything, I hate to say this, but Japanese drivers are pretty damn good. Most westerners become better drivers during their time here, because there are so many zig-zag roads you have to go through safely with cars coming in both directions. You don't have this in most western countries.

Don't get me wrong though. Japanese drivers are not the most courteous at all and will cut you off and rarely will even think about stopping to let someone go first. Some do, yes, but most just go flying by. Not courteous at all. Me first at its worst.

@Elbudado - Being from San Diego as I am, I would have to strongly disagree with you. I have gone driving in Mexico many times and WOW!. I wouldn't say the Mexicans in Mexico have much common sense when it comes to driving and neither would most after experiencing driving there. Pretty damn scary. I lvoe the country, the food and the people, but never the drivers. My apologies.

@Elbuda - Sorry for misspelling your name in my earlier post. That was not intentional.

By the way, but I hate to say this but China, Vietnam and India are the least courteous drivers on the planet.

Oooopps - I meant to say,

I HAVE to say this, but Japanese drivers are pretty damn good.

Not,

I HATE to say this, but Japanese drivers are pretty damn good.

But for the most part are not that courteous and will cut you off in a heartbeat.
