It really is time that the major world powers put their navy ships there to just blow these so-called pirates out of the water - end of problem. They forfeited any rights they may have had when they took up their profession.
Samuraiiki
Amen to that Harry. Take no prisoners, sink them all.

They`re already there.

Of course they're already there but have to comply with a host of rules and regulations as to when and if they can open fire and/or chase the pirates back into Somali waters. Those rules need to be completely ignored or at least overturned PDQ, just get rid of the problem.

Yeah, just take em to guantanamo n waterboard em.

I agree that rather than taking a law enforcement approach, they should be simply fired upon as "enemy combatants". This pirate activity isn't going to stop unless the risk involved is inceased.

You forgot to mention it's also an international tax avoiding haven.

It's an interesting read as to why they took up pirating in the first place, before they got greedy. I wouldn't be happy if people starting stealing my fish and replacing them with medical and toxic waste.

Best solution to this mess would be to cut all humanitarian food and medical aid to Somalia. I know, sounds harsh, but the reality is it is only these criminals who get hold of them all anyway. The needy people of Somalia see none of the food anyway. The foreign forces are hamstrung by endless protocol: it is not just a simple case of seeking and destroying the pirate craft. Moreover, the pirate vessels are fast and often well armed. What a mess. One has to feel for the crews of these merchant ships, largely hard workers from developing countries such as The Philipines.

Yeah -- they should just open fire and be all gung-ho like the Indians... who were quickly congratulated by many... until it was confirmed they simply sunk a Thai fishing boat, or whatever it was. You give them a green light to start firing on anyone and everyone without taking proper precautions and it'll turn into mayhem with all sorts of cases of wrongful shootings, etc. It's not always simple to tell who are pirates until they're bearing down on your with machine guns or what not. I don't think handing everyone guns and saying, "Just shoot anyone with a gun" is the answer, lest they all shoot each other.

Agreed.

Blast a couple of pirates out of the water, I doubt the public would be out crying that much, other then some silly politicians who want to run their mouths. A Proportional Response http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XH9prw47kE

I think outfit everyone passing through the zone with a tracking gun, and get them to tag anyone they're robbed / attacked by. Then send in planes to sink the buggers.
