Police on Wednesday arrested a 72-year-old woman for allegedly strangling her 73-year-old husband, who is a monk, at their home in Ichikawamisato City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Shizuko Nakamura was arrested for killing her husband Gikou around 2 a.m. when he was sleeping at home. According to police, the suspect called her son, telling him she had killed her husband. Police found the victim dead after being called by the son.

The suspect told police that the victim has been suffering from terminal cancer. She was quoted by police as saying, “He's been suffering such pain. I felt sorry for him and I was exhausted from taking care of him.”

Wait... "Nakamura was arrested for killing her husband Gikou around 2 a.m. when he was sleeping at home"

So she killed him, then the cops came, and arrested her when he was sleeping?

or

She killed him, then they arrested her at 2 AM at home?

I felt sorry for him and I was exhausted from taking care of him.

Let's see...which is closer to the real reason?

A= I felt sorry for him

or

B= I was exhausted from taking care of him

I vote for B.

kinniku: B. sentence A. suspended sentence, means she will be sentenced for x years suspended for y year.

I'm just wondering why she didn't do herself in also as per Japanese tradition.

Spidey,

I guess she figured she wasn't the one making her exhausted, so she just decided to go straight to the source.

If he was an Obosan, "monk" is incorrect. It should be Buddhist priest.

I believe the "monk" was a Buddhist. Why is he married? Buddhism forbids suicide or euthanasia. Wasn't the wife also Buddhist.

You might be right Triple888, but put a person under enough pressure and they'll do anything.

Some day one of you may be put in the position of having to kill the one you love out of love. Will you have the cajones to do it despite the laws of men?

Another case of a souse caring for an ill partner who just couldn't carry on. It will continue to happen more and more as the population ages. Personally I don't believe in doctors for terminal illness and I am polite enough to spare my wife the trouble by taking one last "fishing trip" so she doesn't need to strangle me.

I agree with the last few comments. If my wife doesn't have the cajones then I might have to take the "fishing trip".

How can a monk have a wife? Those little translation dictionaries are well dodgy.

Hmm, how can a monk be married? How can a protestant priest have a wife, etc?

Most shrines/temples in japan are family run/owned and marrying a guy that will take over a shrine is a good proposition for most ladies.

One of the greatest horrors that exists is human life. When you realize that this scenario of illness and care-giving to the ill by the love of their life is a common story that will probably happen to MOST OF US, it's proof that you should carefully consider bringing a soul into this world. We think of ourselves as a pair, when reality shows we are individual souls following our individual life programs. We surely need the care of a loving GOD.

A monk, in the English language is a male living in a religious community (of any religion) with other monks under vows of chastity and celibacy: the victim in this case should have been identified as a priest.
