A 34-year-old woman and her 10-month old daughter were found dead on the ground outside their apartment building in Asaka, Saitama Prefecture, on Sunday, in what police believe was a murder-suicide.
Police received a call at around 8:30 a.m. from a resident of the building, in which he said that a woman and a child were lying on the ground in front of the building, Kyodo News reported. The woman and her daughter were confirmed dead at the scene.
According to police reports, the woman was wearing a T-shirt and sweatpants but no shoes, while the baby only had on underwear and a diaper. There were bruises found on both bodies, which are believed to have been inflicted from the fall.
The mother, who was a company employee, lived in the apartment with her husband and daughter. Police are questioning her husband about what might have caused her to possibly commit suicide.

No words, no opinion from me. Just grief.

Not saying that is the case here, but I always wonder about domestic violence in such cases. The topic of domestic violence is so often ignored, especially when it comes with little or no physical violence. The emotional abuse is often far worse for the mind and soul of the person. And don't "why didn't she leave" me. Unless you have been there or taken time to understand it, you may not know or understand that there is no just walking out the door to happily ever after.

Here we go again!! People bashing the mother and feeling sorry for the husband. Yes, we all have feelings but first we don't, and didn't live in the mothers head, nor did we live in their home and know the husband its a sad thing all around and we will read about this again. The problem is we just can't talk about suicide the government the system has to do something about it. Perhaps there were some signs that the mother exhibited that was over looked by the husband, yes this is all subjective but lets not place blame on a situation we continue to read about but not know the victims state of mind, in this case a mother jumping to her death with her child. How many times have we read the mother killed the child and not herself. In this case there is more to what her mind set was because she took her child with her and not the husband.

Here we go again, Japanese mother's killing their children. It must be the highest rate in the world compared to other countries.

Post nata depression is very real and very dangerous! My wife went into some deep depression after our first child she was a totally different person from the woman I married for about 12 months but slowly came back around thank goodness. Sadly with the stoic nature of Japanese culture and the work loads husband was probably always at worl

Another in Japan’s desperate families’ sad parade of prolicide, filicide, matricide, patricide and every other form of familicide continuing in it’s daily morbid pace.
- Where is the state support for families that was publicly promised by PM Kishida to be the hallmark of his administration in his acceptance speech in Oct 2021? -

Try the ghoulish Ponzi scheme of 'buying happiness.'

Another woman who should never have been a mother killing not only herself but the life she was in charge of as well. Japan has a SERIOUS issue with mothers killing their children, but society would rather just sweep it under the rug and hope there isn't another headline the next day, which there always is. Help, as scant as it is, DOES exist, and we need to provide FAR more starting at the government level, and working down to communities. But, if people feel they absolutely cannot live, and must end their suffering, etc., PLEASE do not take others with you who have no say or choice in the matter.
Talk about this with people, educate -- not just with AKB posters, but genuine discussion. Set up hotlines that don't run on business hours one day a week, give more assistance, and support your neighbors and friends!
Instead, what's more likely to happen? The husband will get a small modicum of sympathy before being shunned out of embarrassment, and he will be embarrassed and ashamed, and probably even angry (some of that justified) after losing his family.
You know, the overwhelming majority of parents do NOT kill their children despite living with PPD if they have it, and the many other factors and stresses in parenting. And they need our help! What we do NOT need to do is feel sympathy or pity for people who kill themselves and others, because that is a big part of the reason why it is done in the end.

Post-partum depression maybe? And surprise, surprise, I bet such a topic is not openly discussed in Japan, resulting in this tragedy because the mother had nobody to turn to to talk about it or to get treatment. RIP to them both. I hope wherever they are, they find the peace that they deserve.

Imagine it was some kind of post-partum depression. So very sad. Japan has worked hard to lower its suicide rate and done quite well in general by addressing a lot of factors in the culture, but I'm not aware of much discussion of post-partum depression, which according to some reports I've read can be really horrible.

and to discuss where they can get help. Not just the link.

I expect another copy suicide to happen in a day or two. The evidence is, articles like this inform people who maybe contemplating suicide that this is a way out. That’s why we shouldn’t tell people how they did it. This was one reason the news stations went on about the so called beautiful suicides with gas in groups in the back of vans. Then there were lots of copycat’s. I believe there is a cliff too and Japan has stopped talking about that area.
matbenit would be better to to also discuss mental health issues in articles like this.
Hokkaidoboy
Very sad indeed. I cannot condemn, just say that I hope a motive can be established to bring about closure ... If any can be brought for their family.
And kudos JT for including links to suicide prevention, it's rampant everywhere in these ultra chaotic times.

agree with both above posters. I really feel for the husband. also the poor 10 month old who didn't have a chance at life.

Never mind. Misread. Only the one daughter. Poor husband.

Jesus. Feel sorry for the husband and even worse for the older daughter. Off yourself. Don’t involve a helpless infant who is not even old enough to walk. Coward. I’m not very religious but there is one thing I agree upon: those who commit suicide do not have a place in heaven.

I cannot even imagine the grief the father must be going through right now. RIP mother and child, you were too young to go. I really wish that the suicide culture in Japan becomes a thing of the past and is not accepted as atoning for one's mistakes. I know that there's not much to go on from the article but, what are the chances of the mother slipping or losing balance and falling from the balcony, the average railing on a balcony apartment is about stomach height of the common adult.
