Mother arrested after 2 children die of heatstroke when left in car

Police in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, have arrested a 21-year-old unemployed woman on suspicion of parental neglect resulting in death after her two-year-old daughter and one-year-old son died of heatstroke due to being left in a car.

According to police, Reina Nagasawa's children were in the back seat of the car on the afternoon of July 29, Kyodo News reported. At around 4:50 p.m., Nagasawa called 119 and said that her children had lost consciousness for about 30 minutes at Bosai no Oka Park.

The children were taken to hospital where the boy was confirmed dead due to heatstroke. The daughter died on Tuesday, also due to heatstroke.

Police said Nagasawa initially told them that when she arrived in the parking lot, her children were asleep and she didn’t want to wake them. She said she let them sleep while she used her smartphone for awhile, with the car air conditioner off and the windows rolled down.

However, on Tuesday, Nagasawa told police she left the children alone in the car for about an hour while she visited an acquaintance. Then she drove to Bosai no Oka Park.

Every. Single. Year.

However, on Tuesday, Nagasawa told police she left the children alone in the car for about an hour while she visited an acquaintance. Then she drove to Bosai no Oka Park.

This shows two things, that she understand that what she did was dangerous and wrong, and that she tried to hide it to avoid taking responsibility of her actions.

Hopefully this is taken into account in her trial.

Again. And Again. WTF?

She will now have to live the rest of her life knowing that she stupidly slow roasted her kids to death.

They teach not to leave kids in the car at driving school. Plus these stories make the news every summer. How did she not know?

Her lies are very obvious. No doubt the kids were left in the car a lot longer than she has stated. Such a horrid way for anyone to die. They would have been severely panicked and screaming their heads off until they passed out.

This so common and so infinitely sad.

In the summer if you park your car in direct Sun light it’ll take no time to heat it to deadly levels. I parked outside like that for an hour the other day, everything inside was baking to the point that I just turned it on got back out and waited for the AC to cool it off.

i had the foresight to remove my family from the car after parking the car though.

How many times have I seen this same sad story in different version. Is it so hard to comprehend for some people understand a car parked in the sun turns into an oven?

Two kids at 21 tells you what kind of job she has. Meeting an "acquaintance" where you CANNOT bring your kids with you tells you what the "meeting" was about.

Living is hard.

Heartbreaking.

Rest in peace, little ones.

Pathetic !

The big issue with her lie is:

she said her children died while she was in the car with them, text messaging with the windows open.

I’m sorry but if the car was so hot that they died from heatstroke than she would have been facing equally excruciating heat. Surely she would have kicked on the A/C at some point. But no…..

truth is this lady went for a “friendly” visit to a “friend” and left her kids in the car……

now two innocent children are gone. Disgusting human being.

They were her Kids. She endured having to bear them - surely, she has remorse over her actions ?

One would think so, but when I was a paramedic I met some pure sociopaths.

I have seen/met people whose children died or injured, tat waited to call emergency services until after they finished their TV show after leaving the alone in the Bath or car or wherever.

I once asked why the mother waited nearly a hour before calling for help.

Her reply was the child was "dead as a door nail so I figured why not finish watching my TV show".

Working on Ambulances opened my eyes to a whole different world and most people would be shocked to know what kind of people live next door for real.

sad stories we read here every summer....

An Australian "celebrity chef " announced a new oven to be unveiled at Bondi Beach, where he was cooking lamb.

It was the inside of his car that was the oven, and the lamb cooked well.

A demonstration of how cars are dangerous in summer.

Need technology to overcome stupidity.

2 kids at 21 and visiting an “acquaintance”…obviously not the sharpest tool in the box!

RIP poor little munchkins! Hope they put her away for a long time!

So sad, poor children. She left them in a car for over 1 hour just absolutely sad. I can’t imagine leaving anyone in a car for any length of time.

A child's body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's. When a child is left in a hot vehicle, that child's temperature can rise quickly — and they could die within minutes.

Heatstroke begins when the core body temperature reaches about 40 degrees Celsius.

A child can die when their body temperature reaches 41.66 degrees Celsius.

The fact that she left two young kids unsupervised in a car is already a red flag. Leaving them in a car in Japan's horrid summer heat? She knew what she was doing when she still made the conscious decision to let them roast to death in said car. Send this pathetic excuse for a human being to the gallows.

I feel sorry for the children, the mother told many lies as it appears she just couldn't get her lie straight. Being 21 life is hard, two children I would assume after the first child and if she had no one to help her that would have been a lesson learned to not have another child but she did. We don't know what she was doing with an acquaintence but one would assume she was making a house call. Now she lost it all, her children and her freedom.

Police said Nagasawa initially told them that when she arrived in the parking lot, her children were asleep and she didn’t want to wake them. She said she let them sleep while she used her smartphone for awhile, with the car air conditioner off and the windows rolled down. To do something like this to children, and especially such young children! I know Japan has a loooong way to go with helping young mothers, but I'm sorry, she is old enough to know what she was doing. And in the heat of this summer...my god, I can only imagine what those poor children experienced. May they rest in peace. And may the mother be haunted by what she did to them for the rest of her life.

Heartbreaking.

Rest in peace, little ones.

They never even began in life. And the mother was certainly neglectful, she didn't care at all. this shows where her priorities were in the first place. I hope she has fun in prison.

Those kids already grown up and can tell what they feel. This mother such an heartless, or an intention to do such things? hoping for the two counts of punishment, or 3, for lying.

Man, if I experienced that, I'd have SERIOUS PTSD. Hat off to you.

The mother as most Japanese women are nothing but children themselves add to the Japanese lack of empathy and voila

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Every summer it’s the same thing, and usually these weird mothers are gambling at pachinko. Disgraceful.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Time for the lazy Japanese politicians to get the law to stop this in place….now!

If she was playing pachinko, they would have let it slide, as usual
