We are seeing more of these types of news in Japan of irresponsible and criminal "parenting." It is no coincidence along with the way society in Japan has started to crumble from the past few decades with the dissolution of the nuclear family and moral code.

You’re seeing more articles in the news. No one has ever shown that these crimes are on the increase.

You’ve repeated this fallacy yourself multiple times here and continue to repeat it even though it’s been pointed out as incorrect.

What the heck is wrong with people thinking it’s ok to leave babies alone!!!!!!

it seems to be WAY too common here.

It’s time to start changing your ways japan. More babysitting services, overnight/long term support Centers (子育て支援センター for those of you who are in the know) and anonymous unwanted baby drop boxes)

I bet you would see way less abuse and neglect cases.

There should also be a simple questionnaire when you give birth individually for both parents, asking questions such as “do you think it’s appropriate to leave a 3 year old unattended for.... hours”, etc

I learned as a gaijin. Japanese girls appear to more suitable as wife material by early impressions compared to North American girls.

Example fashion is much better, cleaner, nicer attitudes, seems like they'd be better cooks......

Once you get married LOL night and day difference. I won't say all girls are like this. But why do we always see these stories? It's like girls can't hardly do anything.

You see more stories in the news. That only tells you what the news select, it says NOTHING about the situation in the country overal.

All of these stories also involve neglect and abuse by fathers too.

Wheres the father?

Wow, not again !? 3 years old now 3 moths old neglected or abused or left to die at home by the mother or the parents, this must be the new PANDEMIC in Japan, how sad.

I dont think pointing fingers to which society is worse, or the JT readers’ favorite myth that all bad stuff is a uniquely Japanese problem add anything of value to the discussion. Japan has a quite good system to educate mothers after birth, and there are various support systems in place. Especially for single parents, I know few of them, including my wife’s brother, he got a lot of support from the city office. We both work full time in Tokyo and somehow managed to raise three kids. For sure more support is needed, more available day/night care and baby sitting services at affordable prices etc. but at the end, it comes down to individual responsibility for poor choices

Sounds like crib death.

She left the baby overnight after feeding her,

and returned to find her dead.

3 months old baby sleeps through the night, so she probably thought it was OK.

Instead this happens.

Truth be even if she were home it might've happened, but her guilt made her take on blame.

Stupid and irresponsible! Probably out carousing with some guy. The least she could have done was to get a babysitter

It seems strange that a three month old would die after only 16 hours alone. Something is missing here.

So sad for this angel!

Soon this XXXX (cant call that mother) will confess where she was during 16 hours! Lovel hotel ? Pachinko ? Izakaya ?

Perhaps we are reading about them due to the internet and nothing to do with increase or decrease unless the public is provided with a case study of facts. If there is an increase then based on the generation (age) where it is most likely happening then other troubles could be looked into as to where morals, family upbringing, current environment etc. would paint a better picture. To just come out and openly blame a few cases on morals is not representative of the country as a whole per capita, demographics etc. Speculation does not help anyone i.e. love hotel, panchiko, izakaya as there is just not information provided to make such assumptions.

Make it a law that kids can't be left alone until a certain age to give guidance to those that lack common sense.

Not trying to make excuses for neglectful parents, but Japan doesn't have a 'baby-sitting' culture like some other countries do. I know its becoming more common, but it would help single parents avoid mistakes like this. Perhaps baby sitting hasn't caught on because teenage girls "should be at juku", not working and looking after someone's baby. Strong societal norms do not support a baby sitting service. Just saying.

Did the father have a key?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Where is the father in all this? He is negligent too.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

What is needed is solutions. However, part of the problems is the Japanese culture. And that is a hard thing to make changes to. However, systems must change in Japan somehow. My guess is, the professionals need to care more. People just do not care enough.

WHAT?!? I hope you’re being sarcastic, because a three-month old most definitely DOES NOT sleep through the night. Some might, but neither of my kids did at that age. She’s a terrible parent for leaving an infant home for any length of time. Sixteen hours is unbelievable.

Another one??

And yep there's that guy telling us this is all normal and not remotely excessive..

My guess is she was working. Single mother, remember?

And while I don´t want to defend leaving the baby for 16 hours, I am surprised she died. I thought at 3 months, that would be survivable.

Obviously you don't have a child. A three month old baby need constant care and attention (fed, changed, hydrated) every few hours. I would suspect that she didn't even leave the aircon on for the child, but either way, they child would dehydrate pretty quickly this time of year

Mirai Hayashi

I have 3. Obviously, you are very quick to decide what is "obvious".

You are right! I don’t have ‘a’ child. I have four children and five grandchildren. A three month old does need to be fed and changed but should survive 16 hours in the same nappy. Dehydration may have been a problem, but the baby was left overnight. It just seems very unlikely a 3 month old baby would die in such a short time.

Sempai!

That is what I thought. Obviously, it is not good to leave her alone for 16 hours, but it should not be a death sentence. There must be something else here.

Another one, RIP little one
