Ibaraki prefectural police have arrested a 29-year-old unemployed woman from Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, for abandoning her newborn son outside a nursery home in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, last month.
Police said Mai Iimura, who was arrested on Tuesday, has been charged with parental neglect, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said Iimura has admitted to leaving her son, who was only a few days old, at the rear gate of the Japanese Red Cross Society Ibaraki Chapter Nursery in Mito City at around 10:30 p.m. on June 28. An employee coming to work at 5:40 a.m. the next day found the infant wrapped in a towel inside a tote bag. There was no note left inside the bag.
The baby is currently hospitalized, but his condition is not life-threatening.
Police said they identified Iimura after examining surveillance camera footage outside the nursery.

At least she had the heart to leave it at the Red Cross and not kill it or leave it in a train station locker.

@Lamilly , I agree, but this is how it works in Japan.

This sort of thing SHOULD BE LEGAL. If I’m not mistaken, it is legal to take a baby you can’t afford and leave them in certain places, in the USA, like a fire station, or the like, not sure. No such system exists in Japan, therefore, you end up having dead infants abandoned wherever.

Poor woman. What an ordeal.

That is wrong. What is arresting her going to accomplish? Signal to other women in a desperate situation that it is better to kill the baby?

I wonder what they suggest to desperate women with newborns then?

Why are they punishing her? She wanted to make sure her child had a better life, so perhaps in her mind she thought that was the best thing to do! What were they expecting her to do with the baby?
