Reading this article disgusted me seeing that a mother of such a young little girl would do this. But as you stated maybe she was between a rock and a hard place, hard-up for money. If you are that hard-up for money don't sell your children go into the oldest profession.

If an adult is purchasing pictures of a someone else's 4-year old daughter, you can reasonably assume it is not for innocent purposes. This mom knew that.

They both should be punished but the mom should be punished more. She is supposed to protect her children from loonies like this man. Instead she was one step away from prostituting her child.

But someone should take down Lacyunderall's statement and say something besides "sick is sick". We all know it is sick, but here is why: The mother knew it was wrong, but she did it anyway. No guy wants naked baby pictures for 5000 yen apiece to put on his fireplace. She knew it was illegal and she knew that she was corrupting the purchasers too. And THEY knew they were doing something illegal or they would not have been willing to pay so much. Someone else fill in the rest. I would say that the little girl is a victim because there is the possibility of harm to her and she cannot consent to it. She is endangered.

Just because "your culture" thinks things are acceptable does not make it right. Japan is a major world economy, which is expected to demonstrate leadership in the developing countres, so by running here and there saying: but in other countries; they have the same problems. Also Iwanuma has a population of only 44 000, and identifying the woman as coming for Sapporo narrows that considerably, plus the age of the child, probably to only a few individuals which makes the woman (and child) fairly easy to identify to casual acquaintances.

A total of 4 identifying items are provided, the man's age, that he's in business and his city and area.

Setagaya has a population of 826 000 and in Tokyo a man being a businessman is hardly an identifying factor.

What I'm getting at is that there's a clear disparity in the level of identifying information provided, and with it a clear double-standard. The newspaper isn't permitted to publish the woman's name because the child is a minor, but they've all but put a flashing red sign above her, whereas the man hasn't been treated the same way.

It's unfair on the victim and I think that the newspaper has acted irresponsibly and displayed a clear bias in favour of the man and against the victim (the child).
