Police in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, have arrested a 40-year-old woman after she strangled her one-year-old daughter.
Police said they received a call from a woman at around 8 a.m. Tuesday, in which she said that the child was not breathing and had lost consciousness, TBS reported. Emergency services personnel rushed to the scene and found the girl collapsed on the floor in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest.
The girl was taken to hospital where she died on Tuesday night, police said.
Police quoted the mother, identified as Kayoko Itakura, as admitting that she had strangled her daughter with an electric appliance cord at around 7:30 a.m. Itakura was initially charged with attempted murder and the charge was upgraded to murder Wednesday morning, police said, adding that she has so far given no motive.
Itakura lived in the house with her husband and husband's parents. Police said the others were upstairs at the time of the incident and did not hear anything. Itakura's mother-in-law discovered the girl's body when she came downstairs and called police.© Japan Today
