Mother arrested for strangling 1-year-old daughter

Police in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, have arrested a 40-year-old woman after she strangled her one-year-old daughter.

Police said they received a call from a woman at around 8 a.m. Tuesday, in which she said that the child was not breathing and had lost consciousness, TBS reported. Emergency services personnel rushed to the scene and found the girl collapsed on the floor in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest.

The girl was taken to hospital where she died on Tuesday night, police said.

Police quoted the mother, identified as Kayoko Itakura, as admitting that she had strangled her daughter with an electric appliance cord at around 7:30 a.m. Itakura was initially charged with attempted murder and the charge was upgraded to murder Wednesday morning, police said, adding that she has so far given no motive.

Itakura lived in the house with her husband and husband's parents. Police said the others were upstairs at the time of the incident and did not hear anything. Itakura's mother-in-law discovered the girl's body when she came downstairs and called police.

Humans can not continually take stress day-in day-out without support. PND? No family support? Bullying from the in-laws, no one to turn to... Tragic.

Kinda hard to hear the little girl when your choking the life out of her!

Are you suggesting any of the above is just cause to end a 1 year old life?

I assume he means that lack of support - and lack of anyone caring about the lack of support - can and does lead to these cases.

A lack of support? She lived with her inlaws! The only thing she lacked was sanity!

@Ashley Butela

Completely disagree. There are PLENTY of people with children who have complete lack of support, but they don't kill their children. The is NO EXCUSE for killing such a young child or any child for that matter . She is despicable and I sincerely hope that the justice system doesn't do what they usually do, and give false sympathy for her and let her go. She needs to be put away for a VERY VERY long time

I wonder what the statiistics are for children being murdered by parents in this country as compared to other countries? It seems it's an every day occurance here.

Chalk this one up to another unfit individual taking the government's foolish & discriminatory bribe of a substantial monetary sum to bear & raise children.

There is much more to this story than being told here. Such as, How were the In-laws getting along with a crying child?, how were they getting along with the mother of the baby their Daughter-in-law.?, why were he and her husband living with his parents? and so much more.

There is more in the wind that blows threw that home.

Poor baby, this is around the time a baby starts walking and discovering life. This woman deserves nothing less than life in prison and or the death penalty. If you disagree with this punishment, you are childless and/or heartless.

Quote of the day.

Question how many posters here live with their in-laws. I am not saying the mother is innocent but I have friends who are married and even though they have kids (babies) the mother feels helpless because the mother in law totally takes control over what the mother could or should do. My friends tell me they feel they are just there when she complains to her husband the husband won't stand up to the parents. Again I am not saying she is innocent but there is a lot of pressure being married and being living in your in laws home and being treated as if you are just the husband wife and not a true family member.

Boo hoo stress, boo hoo family discord, boo hoo run away then, don't murder a baby girl. How was that supposed to help your situation?

RIP darling! Your mum should be nailed to the cross!

That doesn't mean they supported her. They could have been doing the very opposite for all we know.

You seem to be confusing the reasons that led to this incident as being an excuse for this incident. Examining the circumstances does not excuse what happened, it just gives more information so that we can try to come up with solutions so that less of these incidents will happen. Burying your head in the sand by refusing to look at the events that led to this situation, just because you don't like the situation, doesn't help anyone.

Of course there is no excuse for killing a child. That doesn't mean we shouldn't look at the reasons that someone would choose to do so.

Is nobody else wondering about what she is doing having a child at 40?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

She truly had lots of support living with family alone is a big support than by being entirely alone. Mental breakdown, hormonal imbalance needed to be diagnosed and medicated would I think be helpful.

I'm guessing they haven't been married for two long. The pressure to have children must have had something to do with this. Crime of passion says she hated the child. Not enough self esteem to say no to marriage, in laws, and having children, and yes to independence.

How sad, and very puzzling. Where I come from these kinds of crimes are usually committed by young and immature mothers, not by married 40-year-olds who really ought to know better.

What is that supposed to mean? My wife is 40 and pregnant. A lot of people are having children past 40. Get with the times.

Funny how when a woman commits a crime, all the justifiers come out of the woodwork trying to explain away her actions.

Men kill due to stress too. It doesn't matter what the reason is. She shouldn't have done it and will have to pay for it.
