Police on Thursday night arrested a woman for strangling her 4-year-old daughter at their apartment in Koganei City, Tokyo. Chigusa Yoshizawa, 47, was arrested for allegedly strangling her daughter, Haruka, with a kimono sash around 2 p.m. According to police, the victim was found by the woman's brother-in-law around 8 p.m. Her husband had asked his brother to visit the apartment after no one answered the phone. The brother found Haruka dead and Yoshizawa standing on the balcony.

Police said that Yoshizawa admits killing her daughter. She was quoted by police as saying: "I thought about committing suicide after I killed her, but I couldn't go through with it.” Her husband told police she has been stressed out from child-raising recently.

Too much crime news sensationalizing on Japanese citizens! Where is the outrage here? I think it would be nice to balance these articles with positive things japanese citizens do. Regardless, it is sickening to see these kinds of crimes against children being committed.

A 47 yo woman with a 4 yo daughter? So that means she was 43 when she had her....Typical middle-aged Japanese woman goes fruitcake when the reality of raising a child hits her.

Please remember women of Yamato: having a child is not the same as getting a new Louis Vitton bag or a lap dog. These things demand almost 24 hour attention and you have 'em for a good 20 years or so.

R.I.P. little one

Typical middle-aged Japanese woman

Yeah, all the middle-aged Japanese women I know make a habit of strangling at least two toddlers every day before breakfast.

Get a grip. If it were typical it wouldn't be news.

greenteaonsens: Good observations and spot on. I know this doesn't matter, but what type of area is Koganei City, Tokyo? The reason why I ask is if you are correct in your statements, was she in a normal area where there are other families that are rasing children where she could have at least had other companions to seek help, or is it an area full of people like her, single and living all to themselves?

God Bless the soul of that poor child.

As usual in these kinds of stories, the Japanese father is conspicuous by his absence. Funny how the J-media give Japanese fathers free passes in cases like this.

And Cleo - this kind of stuff is happening more and more these days (as well as loads of child abuse that doesn't get reported) so stop pretending all is well in Japan and start realizing there are serious social and pyschological problems here that need discussing.

greenteaonsens - No one is pretending that 'all is well'. Yes, this kind of stuff is happening more, yes it is a problem and yes it needs to be tackled. But women (middle-aged or otherwise) who kill children are not 'typical'.

typical |ˈtipikəl| adjective having the distinctive qualities of a particular type of person or thing : a typical day | a typical example of 1930s art deco | typical symptoms. See note at normal .

• characteristic of a particular person or thing : he brushed the incident aside with typical good humor.

• informal showing the characteristics expected of or popularly associated with a particular person, situation, or thing : “Typical woman!” John said disapprovingly.

• representative as a symbol; symbolic : the pit is typical of hell.

In Japan your family kills you!

dr jones actually, in most of the industrialized world, you are twice as likely to be killed or injured by a family member or a close friend than by a stranger. We tell people, especially children, to beware of strangers, but it is the people who you trust that are most likely to get you.

greenteaonsens; c-l-e-o-n-n-k-k! Know what that sound is? That's the sound of cleo's point over your head. I've had a few, too. Anyway.... I'm with her on this one and yes, there is more of it in Japan and everywhere else as we all seem to devolve as a species unfortunately. But it's untypical and not gender specific by any means.

lame excuse & option...she could've spared the child's life and sent the girl to the orphanage instead. besides, she doesnt love her daughter that much, she already thought of killing her.

greenteaonsens - yes, the father should be present when the mother murders her child.
