pitiful. this makes me extremely sad. I have a 2 month old daughter (and 2 year old boy) and never in a million years would I even consider harming a baby.

She was already at her parent's and voiced her concern and worry.. However still resulted in this ugly ending.

They show videos after birth in the hospital about "maternity blues" (it is what they call it in Japanese)... where mothers are easily depressed after giving birth. Couldn't the family hear the baby crying and assist... I was really careful to be aware of it for my family.

@gogogo yeah I didnt want to comment on the family because not sure if they gave her the support she needed or not.. but she definitely needed help and support. post partum depression is real and can result in this tragic loss.

This trend is far too common here, probably due to a complete lack of a) societal apathy and lack of support, b) a pity-after-the-fact mentality that does not enforce laws on infanticide. Lots of families have trouble, and mothers in particular have a hard time -- but they don't murder their children. Lock her up for life.

Postpartum depression is a chemical imbalance in the body, and is not simply 'stress'.

@ Strangerland - while it is true that postpartum depression is an illness and without treatment could last for years I hope you're not trying to diagnose this woman simply by reading an article.

filth. there really needs to be tougher penalties for this. if not jail time, then sterilization. just to ensure such animals cannot give birth again. she does not deserve children.

Maybe you should try taking your own advice.

Anyone who is a parent has had moments when they have had enough. You put the child down and walk outside and have a rest or ask someone else to help/give you a break.

As a matter of fact, it's probably the only thing that would excuse it. If someone's body is chemically imbalanced to the point where they cannot think in a rational manner, it legally excuses them.

You seem to think that every one of these cases is some happy go lucky woman who just can't be bothered, so they kill their baby.

This child didn't have to die. Even if the woman was suffering from postpartum stress, at least she had her parents to help. A lot of mothers don't even have that.

Unfortunately, this case is typical in almost every country you go to. Take the U.S. for example, not a day goes by without some news about parents killing their own children, or stepchildren through years of abuse. Even when a teacher brings up a concern about abuse, social welfare authorities and police won't do anything. Take for instance the case of a child who was tortured to death in L.A. and no one did anything about it:

She speaks as she is herself an immature selfish child. What does she expect from a baby? Yes a baby cries, what a revelation. Or maybe was this woman expecting that a baby is just a kawai toy that she can just show off to her friends so that she can hear them with delectation say how kawai she is?

She is 33 years for world sake but she seems to have the metal age of a 10 years old child. Too bad for this baby, born from the wrong mother.

im writing this with my 5 week old daughter in a sling on me. Sure she cries, sure we get stressed. MORE SURE nothing she could do would drive me to harm ONE hair on her head. Poor baby pitiful mother, if you dont think you can raise them dont have them!! RIP little Sae, as for mother you have the rest of you life and eternity to deal with what you have done.

Not sure what kind of hospital she stayed at after delivery if she did at all but they are really great here about preparing new mothers for their new life at home with their babies. Though not required, baby hospitals do have classes taught by their doctor and city health centers have crash courses women can take with their husbands on how to take care of their future baby.

Anyways as I said many times when I read about these type of stories. Why don't they open up more baby hatches in Japan besides the one in Kumamoto? Give the child a chance to live with someone who can actually love them.

For far too many times have I read about these new parents who kill their newborn babies. I wish there was some kind of manditory counseloring/parental classes for ALL new parents before leaving the hospital with their new baby(ies) to prevent this kind of situation with weekly visits to check up on the parents to see how are they coping with the new roles as parents.

For someone like me who will probably not be able to have kids this is especially heartbreaking.
