Mother, boyfriend leave 3-year-old daughter with severe burns at home while they play pachinko

Police in Yokohama have arrested a 22-year-old woman and her 21-year-old live-in boyfriend on suspicion of neglect after they left her three-year-old daughter suffering from severe burns at home while they went out to play pachinko.

According to police, the mother, Kaho Hashimoto, and her boyfriend, Satoshi Tanaka, have been charged with failure to seek medical treatment after Hashimoto’s daughter sustained severe burns.

Police said that Hashimoto has denied abusing her child and quoted her as saying, “I mistakenly turned on the hot water while giving her a shower” at around noon on Monday.

Hashimoto and Tanaka then left the girl alone in their apartment and went out to play pachinko. The girl’s five-year-old brother was wandering outside and went to a neighbor's home. He said his sister was hurt and his mother wasn’t home.

The neighbor contacted police who came to the apartment and found the girl, semi-conscious, with a plastic wrap covering her burns. Hashimoto and Tanaka were arrested after they returned home at around 8 p.m. Monday.

Police said the girl will require three months in hospital and that a medical examination indicated the burns were more severe than might have been caused by hot water and that they may have been inflicted over a couple of days.

BTW props to the boy. He is the hero of the story. Although they'll probably just give the parents a slap on the wrist and nothing will change.

It is bad enough that they left the girl badly hurt and then her brother wandering outside the house. This alone is too much to bear for those poor kids. I just can't imagine if it's me who found them I would probably cry my heart out because they do not deserve this.

If it’s not bad enough this callous pair burned her, they then turn around and lie about it with a cockermamy excuse. And, they are pachinko addicts who leave their infants unattended. There are lower on the chain of evolution than pool scum.

It reminds me of another case from six or seven years ago when a young couple put their baby under the seat of their scooter in the middle of summer while they went to play pachinko. The baby died, of course.

My heart goes out to the little girl. After her hospitalization I hope she is placed in a home where she will be treated with love. No punishment is too severe for the mother and boyfriend. They are monsters.

Lying scum.

That will come later, after the detention period for the first charge (suspicion of neglect) runs out -- serve a fresh arrest warrant on a new charge every 20 days or so, so that they can keep the suspect in jail almost indefinitely.

And this is exactly the kind of case where this method makes sense. These ghetto "yankee" parents would either go home and abuse their kids more, or just take off, leaving the kids behind.

This is proof of decline in morality in Japan.

If one goes back several decades then the enduring image of the samurai salaryman and the enduring perfeot stay-at-home-wife were the image that JTB sent to the world in their tourist information.

Nowadays, the part-time worker and the working single mother, many people just above the poverty line suggest the state of things in Japan has changed.

There is yet to be a ‘Jeremy Kyle’ or ‘Judge Judy’:creations of a mass media hungry to give the people examples of the bottom barrel found in society, but that time isn’t far off....

How about suspicion of abuse?

Why having kids you want to do without condom ,just get sterilization either one of them . For they can having sx fun without worried of having children.it is sad .They bring them to this world and don't care.

So terribly heartbreaking. There is nothing more devastating than for a child to feel unloved and unwanted by its parents. Even worse, to be hurt by them.

It's sad that we can all comment on child abuse cases like this all day everyday but will it ever STOP ???

NO it will never stop .... Their will always be horrible people like this who children call Mama & Papa. In cases that involve children what is done to the child in return should be done to the parent just worst.

Well, it's been only a couple of days since the government's feigned anger over this issue, and a mere ONE day since they will make abuse illegal. Now's their chance; they can start by prosecuting these two to the full extent of the law. But, they won't. The boy will be taken into social services for a day or two while the police and others decide it's easier just to give poor mom back her kid, and the daughter joining them when she's out of hospital. They'll promise to keep tabs on the family, then when this happens again they'll all point fingers at each other saying they thought everyone else was paying attenion after the "we could not have known" won't fly.

Then the government will pretend they care again for a few minutes, bringing up potential new laws and asking local governments to Hammer out the details, and admit punishment is optional.

Toasted heretic

Leave eugenics to the past, whether you're sympathetic or not to the plight of the marginalised

It is about preventing horrible child abuse, not eugenics. And nothing about these pachinko playing morons sounds marginalized.

I hate this crap.... lock them up for a long time... poor little girl... monster parents!

Why do I just now that more horrible accidents are going happen in this "family".

Could be down to bias and/or a lack of details on the whole sad story. We simply don't know the history of the mother and bf. And that's not condoning their actions/inactions, btw.

I am against intrusive state power, but sometimes forced steriliziation sounds like a necessary evil.

Nope. Sounds suspiciously like a right wing intrusive agenda. Leave eugenics to the past, whether you're sympathetic or not to the plight of the marginalised, there's no argument for forced sterilizations. We all have the right to live, regardless of our circumstances. Be it under capitalism or under any other system.

Horrible case and horrible generalisations about single parents and the less well-off.

Hope the poor kid can get over the trauma and pain and hope her mother and bf are made attend mandatory parenting classes and/or counselling.

There is an emerging underclass in Japan which exhibit feral characteristics.....

This so called "mother" should not ever be able to have custody of these children. Take 'em away from her and put (mom), AWAY.

The 5-year-old seems to be more responsible than his parents.

'Welcome to the ghetto,'

Best comment I have read today.

Feel sorry for the little kid.

“I mistakenly turned on the hot water while giving her a shower”

So naturally the next best thing to do is wrap the toddler with plastic and leave her at home alone with a 5 year old to go play pachinko?

Lock up the two bastards without trials. Poor little girl hope you find comfort and love at adopted home.
