A woman in her late 30s died and her 7-year-old daughter was injured in what police believe was a murder-suicide leap from an apartment building in Tokyo.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 10:40 p.m. Friday at a 10-story apartment building in the Tokyo suburb of Tama, Sankei Shimbun reported. A passerby called 110 and said that two people had fallen from the building.

The woman and her daughter were rushed to hospital. The mother was declared dead on arrival, while her daughter remained in a serious condition on Saturday.

Police said that they found the shoes of the woman and her daughter and a rucksack on the building rooftop. On the woman’s cell phone, there was a farewell message to a friend.

So sad. On top of any physical scars / disabilities she may now have. Its likely the trauma would have resulted in some dissociative symptoms to protect herself. Who knows what traumas she faced before this even. Childhood trauma like this tends to cause life long health and mental wellbeing issues as their whole foundation of trust and nurture, belonging is broken replaced with sense of abandonment, emptiness, defectiveness and shame.

Ofcourse people can thrive after trauma but childhood trauma is when the brain is still developing and it has more significant impact. Her progress also depends on who takes her next.

We have no idea what was going on in their life or in the mother’s head. Mental illness is an illness that you can’t control anymore than you can a cough or runny nose.

The fact things came to this point is horrible...it doesn’t matter if the mother was mentally ill or fed up with all the abuse and not wanting to leave her daughter alone with the abuser.

we can only hope the daughter recovers the best she can and gets help for what she needs, dealing with the PTSD from this and being raised in a safe loving environment.

WHY WHY WHY can’t they leave their kids out of this adult business?!

And now I just realized how much worse it is when the parent dies and the kids doesn’t,

...

Kind of contradicting yourself there

I see a lot of articles for the parents survive and the kids don’t and I usually think it’s so sad, but this is the first article I read where it’s the kid who survives (and I realize how much worse it is)

So Sad. A desperate young woman with a belief that suicide was an only option.

I had a friend who knocked on my door recently. I was half asleep and didn't answer the door, a few minutes had passed and I went to the door and I saw him walking away down the street. A few days earlier he had told me he was suicidal. Later that night he jumped from a 30 story balcony. It haunts me still today. If only I had answered the door sooner.

My kid is 7... never in my wildest psychotic episode would I imagine taking them with me if I decided to end it all. Why?

It’s bad enough with this pandemic, but more so when people choose to take their lives. No, we have no idea behind the suicides. However, we do know that others pay for the deceased, financially, emotionally, and even physically. We must remember that no matter how bad things get, please remember that YOU are important and YOU matter.

Well, at least on the plus side this time the would-be murderer died and the innocent victim survived. Usually it's the other way around.

Everyone passing judgement from up on high.

With barely a paragraph worth of evidence from which to judge.

Who knows what the true story was?

Mental illness? Poverty? Abuse?

Things we will never learn about, I'm sure.

As most simply move on to pass judgement again from their small, safe place.

NOTHING justifies killing your own child...NOTHING!

@ Tom Young

an interesting post. At the end of the day this is another tragic story which we will sadly read about again soon. For those living here who don’t understand NPD& BPD I suggest you do some reading up it will explain a lot.

Star punk.. Its very unusual to survive a fall from 6 floors. Especially onto a hard surface like this was. Maybe she hit something on the way down, or was cushioned by mum but either way, we are into a genuine miracle situation if she fully recovers. I hope she does, nobody deserves what happened to her.

Mr KiplingToday 08:35 am JSTIts not just the girls mental state to worry about. A 7 story fall will have very major physical damage.

Most people don't survive falls higher than 3 stories. And a psychological trauma will haunt the daughter forever. Very sad.

It’s very strange that any of the posts wishing the daughter well and condemning the mother’s actions are getting down votes.

The daughter will spend the rest of her life confused about why the person that should have loved her did this.

I feel for you little one and wish I could take that confusion from you. I hope you know this was on no way your fault and that you are valuable to many people and loved.

Not an act of selfishness. Only God knows what she was going through before the suicide.

So under your own twisted logic, if you're "going through something", killing yourself and trying to take your own child with you is justified. REALLY? I am glad I'm not your kid!

The mother must have been going throught utter mental torment to do such a terrible thing - clearly the balance of her mind was deranged.

I think at least, some compassion is warranted but it seems to be in short supply in the previous comments

@stormcrow

"What about dealing with the mother's mental illness before it's too late?"

Graet question:

That is a shortcoming provincial hither

and What about dealing with pre -crime?

That is also a shortcoming provincial hither

Not an act of selfishness. Only God knows what she was going through before the suicide.

may her soul rest at ease, And the one left behind recover soon.

Why is this so common? It's such a bizarre side of culture here.

Japan's culture is not so strange. I completely understand why parents take the lives of their children when they, themselves, are no longer able to provide for them. Imagine being one of those parents who believes their child will bounce around from one institution to another or fall under the protection of a relative who doesn't want them or can barely make ends meet in their own family. No, not selfish; not strange. Perhaps benevolent, all things considered.

And this isn't a new phenomenon. Unemployed samurai did the same thing.

7 floors! Wow! That’s either going to leave some serious mental scars, or that girl won’t fear anything!!

@that person.

because like npd children are seen as extensions of themselves and not individuals. Like a possession not a person.

Selfish cow. Poor daughter to have that happen to her. Glad she’s ok and that evil witch of a mother can’t harm her anymore

A farewell message to a friend? No husband or family members around? Poor kid probably didn't even understand the situation. What a wicked parent!

leave the kid out of it!!!

Every life is precious, especially that of a child. It's a shame that more can't be done to help these people who are obviously suffering from extreme mental duress.

How many times do the kids end up dying and the parent doesn’t have the guts to carry it out on themselves. And now I just realized how much worse it is when the parent dies and the kids doesn’t,

imagine this girls mental health for the rest of her life
