A step in the right direction.

Nice to see Justice finally served.

19 ( +22 / -5 )

2010 ! The wheels of justice turn so slowly that they gather moss .

I only hope that this 30 years, remains 30 years and that she spends the time reflecting on her cold hearted and selfish choices.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Finally! A REAL sentence, instead of the usual slap on the wrist.

10 ( +14 / -4 )

"which found she had known that leaving the children without sufficient food would kill them".

A fact that a mother rat understands.

12 ( +16 / -4 )

Nakamura regularly left her daughter, 3, and one-year-old son, in the apartment in western Osaka while she spent the night at her boyfriend’s house But when she did eventually return later that month the two tots were dead

OMG... Nobody checked up on these kids..? The grandmother, the Neighbors, no one suspected anything, no one in the neighborhood got suspicious..? Who raises people like this that have absolutely zero disregard for human life..?

10 ( +14 / -4 )

30 years isn't enough. Lock her in her cell leaver her there like she did with her children... X2 then eventually don't go back until you don't here anything from that cell

6 ( +9 / -3 )

What a sick excuse for a human. I hope the prison leaves her unattended in her cell until she starves to death.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

This case is nearly identical in every respect to the sorry story of Rie Fujii, a young Japanese mother living in Canada who let her two small children starve to death while she was staying with her boyfriend. She was sentenced to eight years in prison and eventually deported back to Japan. Some people really are too immature to have kids.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Conviction should have been for Murder 1 - Premeditated.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Im glad the mother is been put behind bars for long time. Little angle RIP.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

What a way to throw away your own life! What kind of self serving monster would let two kids starve to death just so that she could shack up with with some guy.

By the way, Sankei published a photo of her taken prior to her arrest. She looks to be a gal-mama. There are other photos of her on other sites which makes one think that she is very narcissistic.

<http://sankei.jp.msn.com/west/west_affairs/news/121205/waf12120511490008-n1.htm >

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Well, if life is like a Japanese horror movie, then the ghosts of these two kids will come in and haunt her every single night that she's in the clink.

But then again, seeing how criminals often rationalize their behavior, she's probably already considering herself some kind of victim.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

My heart aches for the two tots. To think how much they suffered :(

I'm glad justice has been served.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

She did go as far as to have the children and not give them up for adoption ... seems to be a contradiction. The sentence will serve as a deterrent; at the same time I think young single mothers may need more help.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I mean: prevention is the best cure.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Some posters may have married and seperated with J women. If they have kids, they have to concern for the safety and well being of their kids under care of their Ex. The best thing is Foreign Men have to settle in Japan whether they like it or not until the kids have grown up.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

please not a usual jail but put her in solitary confinement. That will teach her.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

3 young lives wasted.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Unbelievelable and unhuman.....this woman deserves to die starving in same manner.....Japan really needs sex education to avoid such cases in future!! RIP sweet babies

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Conviction should have been for Murder 1 - Premeditated.

Do much reading lately?

Nakamura was convicted of murder

2 ( +3 / -1 )

This isn't a matter of whether this was a wanted pregnancy or not. She is 25 years old, and so that would make her 22 when she had her first child. 22 is well into the realm of adulthood and she should have been able to take responsibility for herself is she didn't want children. At 22, she had access to contraceptives. Hell, a 15 year old has easy access to contraceptives in Japan, so this is hardly an issue. The issue is that this monster was BEYOND irresponsible; she was a heartless, cold, vain, poor excuse for a human being who thought of no one else but herself. I agree, 30 years is acceptable for Japanese standards, given that there have been harsher crimes in the past with much lenient sentences, but I think she deserves LIFE for the sheer fact that she caused these poor children so much unnecessary pain.

I just imagine these poor little kids in their last moment scouring for food trying to stay alive and it literally makes me want to cry.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

the son tried eating his diapers, desperately searching for food. the daughters cries were heard by the neighbors, but nobody reacted. child protection agency employees checked on them, but the mother was not at home. nope,I can't say 30 years is enough.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Rest in peace to the poor little angels who suffered so much at the hands of this sadistic and purely evil animal. The system has got things right with this sentence - however execution wouldve been perfect.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

I would suggest that the women possibly has mental health issues and prison may not be the best place for her. We don't know the full facts of course just the usual juicy bits that the media feed us. The case is very upsetting and the first thing that comes to mind is better monitoring of some children deemed vunerable. T

-10 ( +3 / -13 )

i think hang her in front of all to stop self thinking this type of killing is too much in japan

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Dear God, can we have death penalty for this woman by starving? This woman deserves nothing less.....let her be locked up in a room and starve in same manner......the more read this news the more my anger grows! Even animals care for there new borns.....how barbaric is this witch

2 ( +4 / -2 )

It's true that she had a troubled upbringing (divorced parents, neglect, unstable home life, running away from home, promiscuity) and claimed to have been raped as a jr high student. However she sounds utterly depraved. I mean, even after she discovered the dead bodies of her children, she went and had sex with a boyfriend!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Osaka?? Not Saitama?? Anyway may this horrible @!&!!! of a woman burn and burn and burn in HELL!! RIP little angles down in crappy Osaka

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

why didn't the neighbors do anything? i'm sure they must have heard all that crying going on. the young mother is 100% to blame but society has also failed.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

My answer to this: Good.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

A quote from an excellent movie called 'Runaway Train'

Girl: You're an animal!!! Escaped Convict: No! WORSE! Human!!

About sums it up right there. This piece of trash should never see the light of day ever again.

RIP Little ones!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I would suggest that the women possibly has mental health issues and prison may not be the best place for her.

Yeah, she has mental health issues, anyone that is cold-hearted enough to do what she did is screwed up in the head. However that doesn't mean she belongs in a hospital, she knew well enough what was going on and was a lazy, spoiled woman who liked sex. She belongs where she is going.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Selfish witch burn in hell!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I can't agree with your headline. This young murderess did not "let" her children starve to death, she actively "starved" them to death. I do, however, think that 30 years, if that is what she actually serves, is a long enough sentence, because at least when she does come out she'll be well past childbearing age and not, therefore, able to slaughter any more of her children.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

As usual most responses here are fuelled by emotion and are in fact the type of reasons that this crimes continue. As a society we should look at how to prevent thus from happening again. We should use our energy thinking of ways of protecting children instead of wishing ill on the mother after the fact. Emotionally hatred blurs judgement, and should be left behind in the dark ages.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

@ Fly you seem to be pointing the finger in the wrong direction. Keep in mind most women gain custody of their children and prevent their ex partners from having access to their children. Address the issue as to why the "whole" of the system failed these children. Parents,Neighbors, agencies, laws/protection , society...we could keep going but it will be a good 20 years before we see less of these inhumane acts against children and people alike here... More education and better systems need to be put in place in order for these instances to be stopped.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Lock her in a rubbish infeasted room and let her rot without any food! Maybe then she will feel some of the suffering that her children felt as they died alone in the apartment with no food.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Prenatal advice, "Have you supportive relatives or friends let alone a husband?" If not, abort & never dare conceive to bring up in misery?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

@falseflagsteve

Regarding the woman's mental health. We can all safely assume that she wasn't right in the head, because no completely sane person would do something so hideous to her own children. That's a given. The question is, is she clinically insane to he point that she was unable to judge right from wrong.

She was in the Japanese court system for 3 years before they sentence her, and I am sure that her lawyers entertained insanity defenses, but of course all that has to be proven. For the court to rule her to be guilty, all of those hurdles have to be cleared and we can only assume that they were.

Having said ALL OF THIS, we have to look at the bottom line here. Placing your compassion on the woman is completely unfounded. Having a poor upbringing, being raped, etc is never an excuse to commit murder especially in the methods as despicable as this one. Many people have had as tough if not tougher childhoods, and don't become murderers, so I never buy the "blame on the poor upbringing or blame it on society excuse" If she didn't want her kids, she had options (adoption, contraception, relatives, etc) MURDER SHOULD NEVER BE THE MEANS OF ESCAPE. No matter how you look at this case, her actions CANNOT be justified. Her kids did NOTHING to deserve this. She was selfish and cowardly and deserves the sentence that she received. I certainly hope that this case sets the stage for any future murders of young innocent lives, because THIS is the way justice should be carried out.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

why didn't the neighbors do anything? i'm sure they must have heard all that crying going on. the young mother is 100% to blame but society has also failed.

The neighbors complained repeatedly to child welfare service, and officials made several attempts to visit the apartment, but gave up after getting no response. So yes, you are right, society (or to be precise the government agency responsible) has failed, too.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

@ Mirai I did not place any compassion towards the offender, i objected to those who are too emotional regarding these matters.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Poor babies. Must have been the most scary horrible short lives. RIP. No one deserves that and shame on a government that doesn't offer a safe confidential way of giving up kids you don't want.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Address the issue as to why the "whole" of the system failed these children. Parents,Neighbors, agencies, laws/protection , society...we could keep going but it will be a good 20 years before we see less of these inhumane acts against children and people alike here...

I disagree, inhumane acts against children and those in society who are the weakest have been going on for literally centuries.

It isn't just a Japanese problem, it's a human race problem that is unsolvable as long as humans continue to breed.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

She was in the Japanese court system for 3 years before they sentence her,

No this is not true, she was sentenced a long time ago, the supreme court here just upheld the ruling.

Nakamura was convicted of murder by Japan’s lower courts and sentenced to 30 years at earlier hearings, which found she had known that leaving the children without sufficient food would kill them.

The country’s supreme court on Monday upheld the sentence, the Asahi and Kyodo News reported on Wednesday.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

The should sentence her to all the years she deprived those children of.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@falseflagsteve

I think people get "emotional" because when we read about cases like this, we tend to think about our own children, and how anyone could be so callous and cold, and commit such a hideous act against their own. I don't know if you have children of your own, but if you don't, you probably won't understand until you do. If you do have children, try to image someone taking their lives so senselessly and you would get emotional too.

prison may not be the best place for her

This statement suggests that you do express compassion in her by believing that she could be somehow rehabilitated or treated, and perhaps be put back on the street. THIS is misplaced compassion. Not all mental illnesses are clinical and can be treated in a hospital.

Compassion should be felt for the victims and the friends and relatives of the victim FIRST. I REALLY don't understand how anyone could in any way feel compassion for the perpetrator.

Lastly, someone mentioned that this woman probably thinks of herself as a victim, and according an article. that seems to be true. She was quoted as saying, "I hope my children help me in my time of need, even though I was a bad parent" ...She just doesn't get how hideous and self serving she is...she is INDEED, headed to the right place.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Slightly creepy background ...

Nakamura's father was a gym teacher and rugby coach at a public high school.

Her mother was her father's former student (!) who married him straight out of school and had three kids ... they later divorced because of his violence and infidelity.

The mother took the girls and moved out, but left them alone at home in filthy conditions all the time, and they were badly neglected.

Their father took custody of them, and remarried to a woman with a child of her own, who put her own kid first and treated the girls badly.

Her mother seems to have remarried. Her father is now on wife #3.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, it seems.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Murder 1 - Premeditated (Preplanned) requires the death penalty.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@ Mirai Not all mental health conditions are deemed as treatable and many placed in these places will never be released.Prison is for rehabilitation and losing freedom during time served and she will be put back on the street, so i do not see your point here.

I repeat that i do not feel compassion for the offender, suggesting someone has mental health issues is not showing compassion. Many prisoners are moved to secure mental health hospitals after a while inside when issues not noticed before sentencing are found.

I do have children, yet will not get emotional by thinking up horrible things to do to the offender as i would be lowering myself to her level.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

What about the boyfriend? If he was aware she had left the children alone shouldn't he be charged as an accessory? (Accessory to murder, not fashion)

2 ( +8 / -6 )

To the witch-burners among us, there can be no rationalisation for Nakamura's behaviour. It is by no means unique to Japan - immature parents with a grudge against their own children for stealing their freedom is a phenomenon across the developed world. Fortunately they rarely go this far, but none of our home countries are free from such crimes.

They happen more and more in this materialistic world of ours as we become increasingly distracted by flashing lights, baubles and trinkets that cannot hug us, tuck us in and read bedtime stories, give us a peck on the cheek when we're anxious, or gently reinforce selfless, thoughtful behaviour.

Was this Nakamura's childhood filled with warm love, or cold flashing lights, baubles and trinkets?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Assuming it's allowed in the legal system, I don't know what could be more deserving of the death sentence than this.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

DisillusionedMar. 28, 2013 - 10:21AM JST

What about the boyfriend? If he was aware she had left the children alone shouldn't he be charged as an accessory? (Accessory to murder, not fashion)

I had the same question. Is there any news on this?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

OMG... Nobody checked up on these kids..? The grandmother, the Neighbors, no one suspected anything, no one in the neighborhood got suspicious..? Who raises people like this that have absolutely zero disregard for human life..?

If I remember the story correctly when I saw it on TV some three years back, some of the neighbours did hear cries from the children, but no one went to check. They never thought it was that serious. Later they found out how wrong they were. I think a couple of them actually went on television and admitted as much, expressing their guilt and how they would have to live with this for the rest of their lives.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

She let them starve? Man, that has to be one of the worst ways to go. Top that off it was a mother doing that to her own children. Hope she goes crazy with guilt while in jail.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Personally, I don't 100 % agree with this sentence. She should have gotten life. Here is why: When she is eventually released in 30 years, she will be 55 years old. She probably won't be able to get a job because she'll be too old and stigmatized as an ex-con and a murderer. So in turn, she will not be able to really take care of herself without some kind of government assistance or whatever, When she turns 60, she will not be eligible for the pension program so unless she get's help from her family (which seems unlikely given the circumstances of her upbringing), she may end up being homeless. She has already completely ruined her life, and has no chance of ever being a contributing member of society. Life in prison keeps her off the street permanently and let's her die somewhat humanely. Does she deserve that much? Maybe, maybe not...its debatable.

@falseflagsteve

You cannot rehabilitate or treat someone whose not clinically ill. She was deemed sane. She is a hideous person who made a very bad decision and needs to pay the price. Putting her in a mental institution is not the solution. She needs to have her freedoms revoked and she needs a lot of time to reflect on what she did. From the quotes I read on other news sites, it is very clear that she still does not get the hideousness of her crime and sees herself as a victim. Only monsters do this, and monsters belong in jail.

I do have children, yet will not get emotional by thinking up horrible things to do to the offender as i would be lowering myself to her level.

i doubt that anyone is thinking this...most people rather have the punishment fit the crime, which seems to be a rarity in Japan. 30 years...maybe not enough to most folks...I think its slightly lenient and deserves life for the reason indicated above (among other reason), but for Japan, its acceptable. I would have expected to see 5 years and a suspended sentence but this case when in the right direction for once.

Lastly, as for the death penalty...I do believe in capital punishment, but I would reserve it only for the most dangerous people who have killed many people, like the Akihabara massacre or the Aum people. Those people have literally ruined thousands of peoples lives and deserve to be executed.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

@Mirai I think you fail to understand what prison is for in Japan. It is for the prisoner to serve the time for the offence and to be rehabilitated. You also fail to understand as do most in society, that being defined as sane means mentally healthy. You call her a "monster", no she is a human who has committed a terrible act. The fact that she does not understand fully the seriousness of her crimes would indicate some form of mental disorder. A secure mental health hospital in Japan is not a holiday camp by the way, it is about as strict as a Japanese prison and the conditions are almost as spartan.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

What about the boyfriend? If he was aware she had left the children alone shouldn't he be charged as an accessory?

The mother was responsible and has been sentenced accordingly. I see the same kind of comments on this site relating to the Hinds case, where people want the taxi driver, hotel receptionists, doorman all in jail too. That kind of thing works under a plea bargain system because you can scare the pants off someone with the bluff of a possible life sentence and get them to accept a year or so. But just because he was aware they were being left alone, attempting to prove that he was an accessory to murder in a trial would be extremely difficult. You'd have to show beyond doubt that he knew they were starving in order for him to be guilty of that.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

And so the neighbours should feel guilty. If you can hear children crying non stop all night and all day on a regular basis, clearly something is very wrong. Even if they didnt have the balls to go and check themselves, they should have notified the authorities FFS. People turn a blind eye way too much in this country. As a person who is new to fatherhood, this story makes me really mad.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

@falseflagsteve

I beg to differ, but prison is for punishment. If it was for rehabilitation purposes, then people would be released as soon as they are well, and people would come and go on their own free will. That's not the case, is it? You are given a time that (usually) fits the crime that you committed, and you are required to serve that time in a locked room with limited freedom and limited contact with society. THAT is a penalty NOT treatment. It is only assumed that serving time will give the prisoner the ability to reflect and rehabilitate themselves. Rehabilitation is not what this woman needs, she needs to be punished, hence she is going to the right place.

Rehabilitation is somewhere you go to have some type of treatment through discussion or drugs. You don't get that in a prison. And I don't believe sane = mentally healthy otherwise over half of the planet would be deemed insane. Sanity is the ability to act competently in a society. This woman obviously was competent. She was able to interact with others, work, and take care of herself and her children (until the point she decided to kill them by starving them).

Your take on what a human is is subjective. In my opinion, part of being a human is the ability to act logically and show compassion and humanity towards others (especially their own children)..and as mentioned by someone else, even a mother rat takes care of her own children.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

@Mirai You may disagree all you want and have your own opinions on what prison should mean. In Japan the punishment is to be removed from the general population, make yourself usefull and improve your self for your release. The idea is to rehabilitate you on your release, of course this does not always happen but that is what prison in Japan is for.

I think you do not understand what rehabilitation means in this context or understand what prison is for in Japan. The information regarding Japanese prisons and their purpose can be found online in Japanese and English. The main reason for a prison in Japan is to rehabilitate the prisoner while removing them from the population.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

@falseflagsteve - your comments are well thought out and deserving of support! But as been shown on these boards so many times - it is mostly emotion which informs peoples 'judgement' in matters to do with "justice' articles discussed here. To consider that a mother could be pushed to such horrific extremes should cause us to consider the whys and hows, not just a banal and crass lust for revenge. 30 years in jail does exactly no good at all for anyone.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Those kids must have felt so alone, just waiting for their mother to come home, I feel so angry about this, those kids wouldn't know any better and would have loved their mother and she treated them like unwanted pets.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Truly astounding crime. I actually cannot think of anything worse than a mother doing that to her own children. Pure evil! Makes Ted Bundy and Jack the Ripper look like a Sunday School preachers. Death sentence is the only punishment that would come close to fitting this crime but is still lacking and a far better death than her children received. The thought of what those poor children went through just simply makes me cry.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Japan has many horrific crimes for killing family members such as starving kids and chopping, stabbing and burning parents. How sick and babaric is the today society?

The kids were starved and dehydrated with lingering death. How cruel and inhumane? In theory , She may be sentenced with 30yrs. In the reality, She may be released within ten yrs with good behaviour bond. Who knows she may have another kids with new boyfriend again!

There may be another possible nightmare if she will be released earlier. She should be hanged instead of pampering or rehabilitating in the prision.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

falseflagsteve: I think that the ultimate conclusion that most posters here are coming to is that we don't think it's worth rehabilitating someone such as this mother.

Even if she were successfully rehabilitated, no one wants someone like this to return to society. Ever. This is mainly due to the fact that this woman spent the better part of 4 months, to slowly, painfully, and willfully, kill her 3 yr old and 1 yr old children, all while partying with her boyfriend. She didn't even have the conscience (if you could call it that) to leave them somewhere, or god forbid, stab them or strangle them to make their deaths quicker and less painful. This was not a random, or 'heat-of-the-moment' stabbing of a total stranger, this was something that no matter how much somebody was deemed 'rehabilitated', cannot be forgiven.

So yes, we are all interested in knowing what needs to be done to prevent something like this from happening again, but rehabilitate this b*tch? She doesn't deserve it.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

@Tahoochi. Thing is we do not decide what happens to this woman the law does. She did something awful and nobody is asking to forgive her. Forgiveness is not part of a humane judicial system. Part of having a humane system is treating the offender with dignity and with care. We may not like this for someone like her but the system has to show it is better than the convicted and be based on justice not revenge.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Unfortunately reason, humanity and logic won't sway this particular audience. The fact that this woman herself did not consider those essential human traits does not excuse us doing so. Otherwise we are just unthinking brutes.. many here should think on that.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Based on her background, I'd say she is a sociopath with a complete lack of empathy. She could have been born that way, but it's more likely that her family situation made her that way. The whole story is tragic and shows how the cycle of abuse just continues and continues. At the very least, she should stay in prison until she is no longer able to have children. But, I doubt she could be "cured", and may always be a danger to society.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I find it sad that people like this have children and that there are some parents out there that would love to have a child of their own blood but are unable to have a heir or legacy.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

falseflagsteveMar. 28, 2013 - 01:11PM JST

Thing is we do not decide what happens to this woman the law does.

Yes, I agree with you there, and this is the 'comments section' of a news website; not the court of law. I am not qualified to pass a verdict or sentence based on my knowledge of the law and judicial system. That's why I use my own sense of values, ethics, and morals, to voice my opinions which, especially in cases like this, are admittedly backed up with a lot of emotion. Don't get me wrong, my sense of values are not perfect, but that's where my opinions come from, and this is where we voice our opinions, is it not?

And no Jaymann, I hope I'm not an "unthinking brute", I just think that the punishment should fit the crime.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I don't understand why the social services people, after having been called by the neighbours, didn't force their way into the apartment. Surely they only need to inform the police that children are inside and in danger and then the police can break down the door. Am I expecting too much commonsense from these people?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

This deserves the rope in my opinion

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Harry_Gatto.

That would be an ideal situation but the social services can't legally force their way into an Apartment/House and check the conditions. So it comes to a he said/she said situation.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

the social services can't legally force their way into an Apartment/House and check the conditions.

But the police (or the landlord/landlady/building manager etc.) can. I don't know the full circumstances, but young kids and babies naturally cry, so there must have been something very suspicious and unusual going on for the neighbors to call social services. That fact alone would seem to justify a forced entry.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I remember that story. Truly heart-breaking. Little scratch-marks on the fridge, gnawed up pieces of cardboard, etc. Just horrible. A "just" punishment would be to let her starve to death. But won´t bring the children back, either.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This tragedy reminds me of the Japanese movie, Nobody Knows, where 4 young children were neglected and left to survive on their own. My heart breaks for those little ones....

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Boyfriend is more important own children? Go home, you are drunk

0 ( +0 / -0 )

3 and 1?

Will 30 years of her life in jail do any good? Has she realized what she has done and does she care? Then allow her to spend her life trying to somehow help society. Otherwise, death.

Not to punish her, just not to waste time and money on this piece of crap.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Not that I agree on what she did. But did anybody really get to diagnose her mental issues? You have to find the problem as to why this happens and deal with it properly.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

My heart bleeds for this kind of cruelty and inhuman treatment of innocent children by a mother who carried them in her womb for 3 trimesters of pregnancy and just let them die of hunger. 30 years in jail her crime is not even enough. Even Hell. There is really something wrong with the Japanese society especially in Spiritual and Moral aspects.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

This woman deserves this sentence. But I'm not hearing anything about the father(s) of the babies who has/have an equal responsibility in the death of these kids. Just because the mother carried them in her uterus, doesn't mean they are her responsibility only. It's all too easy for those monsters to get away with child neglect. You deposit the sperm, you create a human being, you better take responsibility for that too!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Picture of the criminal please, I want to see what the devil looks like.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

MeanRingo: There's a link provided from a poster above to the criminal in question.

<http://sankei.jp.msn.com/west/west_affairs/news/121205/waf12120511490008-n1.htm >

Another "mother-of-the-day" for Japan. I doubt she'll be happy about the 'inconvenience' of no nail art centers or keitai service in prison -- probably something she ought to have thought about BEFORE murdering her two kids.

DigitialFunk: "This woman deserves this sentence. But I'm not hearing anything about the father(s) of the babies who has/have an equal responsibility in the death of these kids. Just because the mother carried them in her uterus, doesn't mean they are her responsibility only."

Agreed, but a couple of things to keep in mind: first off, it says she was a single mother. Second off, many mothers in Japan who have been divorced have solitary rights to their children -- the only right of the father is to give money. They are not permitted by law to see their own flesh and blood until the kids turn 18 and then only if the kids choose to seek out their fathers. So what do you suggest the father(s) in this case should have done? If a neighbour can't do anything about a baby crying next door, and Japan's more-than-sorry social services are not allowed to enter despite suspecting something's wrong, what is a father barred from seeing his children supposed to to?

I'm concerned about how the boyfriend didn't know about these 2 children. Did he think they were been taken care of for their grandparents of someone else? Should he be judged too?

I don't know if someone else knew about the children. Some families are completely isolated from others and don't think about asking for help if something is wrong. If I had children and had difficult times raising them I would look for support from other, because I don't consider it embarrasing and it's for my children's health.

Thanks for the insight...

TessaMAR. 28, 2013 - 09:52AM JST why didn't the neighbors do anything? i'm sure they must have heard all that crying going on. the young mother is 100% to blame but society has also failed.

The neighbors complained repeatedly to child welfare service, and officials made several attempts to visit the apartment, but gave up after getting no response. So yes, you are right, society (or to be precise the government agency responsible) has failed, too.

Isn't this the same as firemen coming up to a burning building and then going home because no one is answering the door?

I have said this countless times, if you do not want a kid, take them to the baby hatch for adoption.

falseflagsteve said "... Part of having a humane system is treating the offender with dignity and with care...

I think he is right, If we dont treat people with dignity and care, the goverment wouldn't need a judicial system, the population could just blunt her to death. Thats not how things work in the year 2013, which is the year I am living now.

Well if the 30-year sentence stands, it's pretty much guaranteed she will never be able to do this again to one of her kids. She should be well into menopause by the time she is released.

If the Japanese Jailed inmate community is anything like the USA jailed inmate community, psycho-bitch will get her just "dessert" at the hand of those inmate that detest adults who abuse children. I wouldn't be surprised if she were slain dead by the end of her first year incarcerated. One less mouth to feed! (PUN INTENDED! )
