It would seem this woman should have left this psychopathic monster long before Mia's death.

The Chiba court is scheduled to hand down a ruling on Kurihara on March 19.

Please give him life without parole. Oh and let the guards and the other prisoners know what he did.

Dad woke me up late at night and made me stand.

concerted abuse between Jan. 22 and 24 last year in which he deprived her of sleep and nutrition as well as forced her to stand in a bathroom while he sprayed her with cold water from the shower.

> He is also accused of physically abusing Mia and breaking a bone in her chest

Hey prison guards, that's what HE did to a defenseless little girl. Just saying....

While I understand there are many circumstances we don't know, it is difficult to comprehend why she left the children to live for a few months alone with the abusive father, while being aware it was "hell". In my opinion, her sentence should have not been suspended. I will give an extra hug to my kids this evening, while sparing a thought for the poor abused kids who lost the parent lottery.

It's not a "lay judge" trial! It's a "lay jury" trial! Regular folks like you and me can not be judges here! Only on a jury!

you are grossly incorrect. the system is called a lay judge system, lay meaning citizens, because the citizens act as both jury and judges. they also mete out the sentence.

a basic wiki search would make you a more informed commentor:

On May 28, 2004, the National Diet passed a law requiring selected citizens to participate as judges (and not juries) in trials for certain severe crimes. Citizens chosen for such service, called “saiban-in” (裁判員, "lay judge"), are randomly selected out of the electoral register and, together with professional judges, conduct a public investigation of the evidence in order to determine guilt and sentences.

smh...

Poor girl. Absolutely heartbreaking. Makes me cry to think of what she went through. I understand, because it happened to me as a child, though no where near as badly. I remember the pain of feeling scared, unloved and scarred inside. But I made it though all that and have made a great life for myself, thank God.

May every child be brought up by parents who love them.

What was she doing ??? when the child was abused ???.

Since they let the mother off so lightly, I hope they send him up the river for the max allowed.

For the record, judges and juries are entirely different, and lay judge is actually correct. If you don't like "judge", you can try assessor, but they are NOT juries. A jury sits and confers separately from the judge and only tries the facts, using the interpretation of law fed to him by the professional judge.

The lay judge works WITH the professional judges on the ruling and has influence on both the fact and the law. That's why it is not a lay jury system.

meant to say they act as judges and mete out the sentence. not both jury and judges...

Well, why mother leave without bringing-up her children? They were both monster.

Didn’t she divorce him and then marry him again? She was free and went back. Too bad she’s not serving her 30 months but hopefully her testimony will help to convict him.

The mother, 33, was giving evidence in the lay judge trial

I have to agree it's a lay judge system, not a jury. If I recall correctly, there are 1-3 actual judges, with a number of civilian 'judges', and in fact the judge can overrule the lay judges I believe.

Fifteen years since this all came around though, my memories may be a little off. But it cannot be called a jury system.

For reasons I've never been able to comprehend, abused partners keep returning to the abuser. They are victims and deserve the benefit of the doubt. I concur with her lenient sentence but he should die for what he did to the young girl. I'll never be able to scrub her face from memory.

ArtistAtLarge - Many women become trapped in these types of relationships, mostly due to financial reasons as well as whatever very real threats to them and their children.

Which is even more reason to get away from him.

This is why we need the death penalty.

Far easier said than done.

This woman got away. She spent months away and did nothing.

She knew what was happening. She looked after herself, and abandoned her daughter.

Many women do get trapped in these kind of relationships, and they get out, eventually they find a way. This woman used her daughter, to get free. Despicable.

FYI, It is only called a "lay judge" here in Japan, poor translation, as it is in fact a lay jury system.

FYI, It would, of course, be redundant to refer to a “lay jury” since jurors are by definition lay people.

Judges oversea and run the courts! Not the "lay jury" members!

The saibanin system works different from the jury system in common law countries, hence the deliberate choice to use “lay judge” as the English translation. In Japan a panel of 9 judges, 3 of them professionals and 6 lay judges hear each case. The professionals give instructions on the law, but all 9 make findings of fact and decide guilt or innocence together.

The mother did nothing from a distance, never opened her mouth to protect her daughter, when she could have. She knew full well what kind of monster she left her with. She is a disgusting coward who traded her daughter's life, for her own.

The husband/ father needs to be ended.

Some of shallowly commentators are very quick to jump into the conclusion that mother is also accountable for Mia's death. Well, surely she has to be responsible as the mother. But when it comes to abusive man and if she is financially dependent on him, she must first build up some skills to be financially independent and support her children. She may have thought the the children would be ok with their father. Some people with mental disorders are totally normal most of the time and monster awakes when no one is there to resist. Takes advantage on small children, dependents, old people or even colleagues under his rule.

This IS an English website, so it behooves the "translators/news repeaters, to get the "English" correct!
