Big news, light sentence because murdering kids rarely matters to Japan's justice system.
Harry_Gatto
The poor child is still very much alive thank goodness, which you would be aware of if you had read and understood the article.
Fighto!
Absolute gutter trash. The scum needs a minimum of 20 years prison- and a ban from any contact with children for life.
I just hope the poor girl finds a loving foster family.

Scum. Inhuman scum.

What a piece of work. And how did nobody at the hospital catch on to this for 5 years until they happened to overhear a conversation?
Martimurano
She's going to need all the help she can get to survive this appalling episode so early in her young life - there will be a loving foster-family who will step in, hopefully.
It's a terrible indictment today that there are so many deranged adults who deliberately let the children down, the world over.

Absolutely disgusting.
This sort of thing makes me feel I wasn't such a bad father after all.
Disillusioned
At least the kid will get three meals a day in an orphanage, for a little while anyway. Her mother will get a suspended sentence and the child will be returned to her. They will get monthly visits from welfare workers for a year or so and all will be forgotten. Hope the kid makes it.

How SICK and SAD, and please be fair to all the hard working mothers out there and STOP calling a child killer a mother !! because she is not.
Disco Biscuit
Where’s the child support from the father ? Japanese men really need to step up. And the courts need to enforce, a minimum percentage of the fathers salary that goes directly to the mother, 15-20 percent for the first child.
Fines, interest and the threat of jail time should also be introduced for Japanese men who do not support their children.

I'm a strong advocate of the "eye for an eye" type punishment. I'd like to see this same thing done unto her in addition to jail time.

I wonder which hospital notified the police? Was it the one she was at 39 times? If so, you'd think they would have detected something amiss earlier? Seriously, 39 times????

The death penalty is generally reserved for murderers.

It's hard to say what's right for this case. Obviously, the kid did not die, which eliminates homicide. It's also clear that the holder of parental right did not intend kid to die, even if it may only be because she wants those payouts. That eliminates attempted homicide. Basically, under the law, it is impossible to justify a really heavy sentence for her, and an attempt to force the issue would be to harm the rule of law. Thus, I should hope that this community doesn't get up to its usual hijinks when this case is reported again and the woman given a light sentence.
Having said that, there is an unsatisfied desire for something more.

Directly to the mother? Great deal that would do here. That would just give her more money to do recreational activities while hospitalizing her daughter.

and she will still get less of a sentence than she deserves....

It is not hard at all. What is right is for this woman to be sentenced to years imprisonment.
If Japanese law cannot justify putting a woman who tortured her own daughter to the point of hospitalization multiple times for financial gain into prison for many many years, then Japanese law seriously needs to be changed.
if this women is handed a light sentence, any right-thinking person should be up in arms about it. Anybody who thinks otherwise is part of the problem.

When it comrs to child care some adults reach depths of repulsiveness that only the devil knows.
Chabbawanga
Execute this wretch. Literal scum. No benefit of letting her live
Inaka Life
I have a feeling she’ll get more time in jail for defrauding the cooperatives than she will for nearly starving her child to death.

Appalling child abuse.

Ah the shame photo, it will stop all bad behavior going forwards...problem solved.

This woman is Evil. She loves her lover more than her child. Her child must be taken away from her for adoption by a loving family. Her punishment should be 1. sterilization. 2. forbidden to adopt any child or have anything to do with children. 3. A very long prison term.
John
What a horrible inhumane mobster. Knowing Japanese system, i suppose she will get a suspended few years sentence instead of well deserved death penalty.
nandakandamanda
She's hiding her face so members of the public will not recognize and shame her.
njca4
Through her actions, this woman has caused her child to become a diabetic, which is going to have a knock-on effect and create all sorts of other health problems that have a high probability of shortening her life expectancy ....
No leniency for this one please !!!
Stephen Chin
She is inhuman.

Man! She's a real nut case. I pray that her kid get lots of attention and nourishment. I'm sure the kid will also need mental counseling too.
So pretty much, she was living the life while her kid was paying for it and suffering. I can't understand what kind of uhmm, human, does that to another. That in itself, is mental and cruel. Shame on her.

Actually, if you go to YouTube and check the TBS News Dig Powered by JNN,
“共済金詐取”の母親 5年前から娘に下剤か 娘の入院直後に“旅," you can see her face.
Kazuaki Shimazaki
Well, if that is true, the fact she caused easily identifiable permanent damage can be used to justify a higher sentence, but the article doesn't say that. It said the kid was discovered with hypoglycemia, a.k.a low blood sugar. Left untreated, diabetics lack sufficient insulin to break down sugar and get hyperglycemia, high blood sugar. Hypoglycemia happens to diabetics when they mismanage their insulin intake relative to the food they eat and the insulin "dissolves" too much of the sugar in the bloodstream.
The reason for they hypoglycemia probably had little to do with pancreatic function and everything to do with the fact that deprived of food, all the sugar in the bloodstream had been converted.

I would like to know the background of how it came to be that way at the expense of the child.
