Commenters are talking about post-partum depression, happens everywhere etc. etc. etc.

Did post-partum depression kill that 2 year old girl in Sapporo recently? She cried from her apartment for months. When she died, she’d had no food in her for 2-3 weeks. Beating wounds all over her body. Cigarette burns all over her body. Neighbors called and called for help. Child welfare, police passed the responsibility and took no action while she cried for help. Child welfare’s excuse: no night visits to homes. No night visits after all those calls and cries from that little girl.

I was sick - sick! - reading this case.

Living in emotional isolation even though surrounded by people has consequences that can be catastrophic.

I totally agree! My husband got paternity leave for 2 months. Our baby is now 3 months. Only one child. It is difficult! You have easy babies and tough babies. Dads should be at home too! Only for the first month at least

This right below the article about men not taking the paternity leave they are entitled to. That woman should not have been left alone with herself, much less two children. No one should be in the first months post-partum.

For those that seem to think postpartum depression is no excuse for infanticide, please think again and do your research to learn about the seriousness of postpartum depression.

This case isn’t something new. Things like this happen all around the world. There are even mothers that have stabbed their newborn children and doctors doctors recognized the effects of postpartum stress and depression.

Taking the life of a child is very tragic but depression is something real.

You can’t use your experiences on depression as a reason for why others should act or behave a certain way. The factors surrounding every situation is different.

Well said, Cricky. It's a horrible situation and isn't addressed enough.

And could some people desist from calling for sufferers to be executed? Please? It's unhelpful and a bit disturbing.

Post natal depression is caused by a sudden and huge imbalance of hormones. Can't control that. Left untreated, even recognised, spirals. If and if this is the case the blame is on society, families for turning a blind eye, not her, she is not herself. She will suffer no doubt. As her hormone levels balance out a realisation will scare her forever. It's a part of motherhood that needs more attention. I would say if it is this she will need help but society needs to wake up and get more pro active help for mothers who are spiralling into hormonal madness through no fault of their own.

Hang her.

Thats the only solution.

Hanging women to please a bloodlust is no solution at all. I'd suggest that you might want to move to some of the less enlightened regions of the world for such barbarian practices.

What's needed is mental health services, post natal checks and less judgement. As ever, we don't have any real details of the tragedy and what this person had to deal with.

I and millions of other people get depressed at times, but I (we) do not kill. Depression didn't make the woman a killer. Her personality / upbringing / lifestyle and habits, I'd look there first...

She sounds as if she was clearly suffering from postpartum depression. I guess her husband, family, and friends all turned a blind eye to it even though they said she was showing signs.

Postpartum is a very serious thing and it shouldn’t be taken lightly.

People who murder their children do not get off in Japan. If you so claim, it's on you to provide evidence given the claim is far outside the norm.

It would seem all the signs of post birth stress were recognized, but nobody did anything about it. Now, the baby is dead. Sad!

Hang her.

Thats the only solution.

It's obvious they know they can get away with it which is why this happens so often. Japan really needs to make an example of these animals.
