Mother whose daughters died after being left in overheated car gets 6 years in prison

A 27-year-old woman who was indicted for parental neglect resulting in death after she left her two daughters, aged 6 and 3, in her car while she went drinking last year, was sentenced to six years in prison by the Takamatsu District Court in Kagawa Prefecture, on Friday.

According to the ruling, Maria Takeuchi left her daughters Mayuri, 6, and Yurie, 3, in the back seat of her car at around 9 p.m. on Sept 2 until 12:40 p.m. the next day, Sankei Shimbun reported. The car, locked and with the windows up, was left in a shopping district near Kawaramachi Station.

When she returned to the car at around dawn, Takeuchi noticed that her daughters were unconscious. She drove home but left the children in the car. In the afternoon, at 12:40 p.m., she called 119. The girls were taken to a hospital where they were pronounced dead. An autopsy showed that they died of dehydration due to heatstroke, the court heard.

The meteorological agency said the temperature on Sept 3 reached 37.6 degrees, but it would have been much higher inside the car.

Footage from street surveillance cameras in the area as well as information provided from employees of drinking establishments indicate that she went bar-hopping with a friend while the children were in the car.

Only 6 years?????? Make sure she can’t get pregnant ever again by the time the alcoholic is freed

6 YEARS for ending 2 Precious lives? that's 3 years per a child, makes you wonder what is life worth in Japan???

And the government wonders why people are so careless !!!

Well, I said the other day we'd be lucky if she sees five years, and I was pretty close to the mark. Good old Japan, an ageing population and it puts the value of a child at a mere couple of years. Meanwhile, when the US extradites the men who helped Ghosn escape how much do you want to bet each of them gets 15 years or more?

What she did was terrible. But it's important to find out what drives young people to do such a thing. What was going on in her life, what had she experienced that inured her to the plight of the kids?

Bruh.

What is there left to find out? The text clearly says she was bar-hopping with a friend while the kids were in the car; that has been recognized in court. Does that even justify her behavior the slightest? Couldn't she leave the kids for a few hours at a relative's or at a friend's place? I swear that too many people out there can be so inept as parents or they don't even know how to use their brains.

Sentences in Japan for first time offenders, (no matter how shocking the crime) are usually very lenient.

That's so screwed if true. What is the point of sending someone in jail if not to make that person have a deep and hard look at themselves for what she/he has done then?

Do you think the sentence would be higher off she'd left two elderly people in her car to overheat?

Sentences in Japan for first time offenders, (no matter how shocking the crime) are usually very lenient.

The tough part is the period before trail, when every ploy short of torture is used by the police and prosecutor to get the person to confess to Mens Rea (intent).

I suspect in this case the judge is satisfied that there are grounds for leniency.

Yeah, ok.

Killed both your children only get 6 yrs. Nice to be a woman in 2021.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Far too short.

QuidProQuo

My sarcasm didn't come through in my post as much as I'd intended.

This is an awful tragedy and I feel not a single drop of sympathy for the neglectful mother.

She waited 6 hours because she was more concerned about getting a drink driving conviction than the welfare of her children. That alone shows just how self centered a person she is.

Six years means out in 3-4 if she is a model prisoner... Justice?

In fact, the maximum sentence for this type of crime is 20 years, but as usual prosecutors only asked for 6 years.

Why is that? Considering how outrageous the crime has been recognized by the court, going for the home run with maximum punishment would be what any prosecutor would do.

They ought to put her to sleep.

Why do certain men always call for Japanese women, in these topics, to be excecuted?

What she did was terrible. But it's important to find out what drives young people to do such a thing. What was going on in her life, what had she experienced that inured her to the plight of the kids?

Killing her is barbaric, vengeful and won't bring the little ones back.

The most disturbing thing about this cases is, she knew the kids were in distress when she arrived home, but she left the kids in the car for another 5-6 hours during the heat of the day. This shows intent. She should have been charged with a double murder and her jail sentence should be much longer.

Yup. That pathetic excuse of a mother should have been sentenced for at least double of that if not something harsher. She knew what she was doing but chose to let her children die. I see no redemption possible for such contemptible person.

She should get life. two kids died !!

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

So you're telling me not a single person noticed there were kids in the car in this heat? I doubt it. They just didnt feel like it was their place to interfere. They are as guilty as that monster of a woman!

Heat her cell up to 37.6C+ for the next six years and see how she likes it.

Other reports said she went to the house of the "male friend" she was bar-hopping with.

Which is the truth?

If I were the judge, for the real punishment, she would not live to see the light of day.

Unfortunately the judge doesn't have that kind of power.

In fact, the maximum sentence for this type of crime is 20 years, but as usual prosecutors only asked for 6 years.

Murder or manslaughter or just plain beating children to death has never attracted heavy sentences. But defraud one of the big finance companies and say goodbye to the majority of your life.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Typical Japanese sentence for killing your own kids. Get used to it if you're going to live here a long time.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I would have given her the rope..monster

Sometimes people flup their lives and cause great destruction. Not excusing her and believe 10 years is reasonable, but if you really want to “give her the rope”, that would make you a premeditated murder.

@Yasuragi:

This sad excuse for a mother neglected her children for over 15 hours, in scorching temperatures, leading to their deaths...and you think she's suffered enough? It's obvious she had no regard for their lives. If I were the judge, for the real punishment, she would not live to see the light of day.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Just as I feared... :(

3 ( +4 / -1 )

9 years would have been more fitting.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Double manslaughter, parental neglect.

If she has any conscious then the 6 years is a good start.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Sure, only six years, but golly hasn't she been through enough? Isn't losing her children the real punishment here? /s

The poor father.

You gotta be kidding me.

She’s gonna be 33. Just in time; she’s probably going to have one or two kids.

She shouldn’t be able to do that; she doesn’t deserve that.

6 years is nothing. not enough time to think about what she did.

19 ( +23 / -4 )

Only six years?

24 ( +26 / -2 )

Well deserved. Surprisingly harsh in this place though I think she should have got more.
