A not surprising tragedy.

It’s a myopic military Junta that the LDP support for their own reasons. The amount of shame on the LDP would suffocate a normal person. But they are far from normal.

Purely a political decision.

Myanmar is a despicable rogue state. Japan should not be assisting them in any capacity going forward.

Thing is that the LDP is not just one person, and if money is involved, they manage to overlook a lot of things!

Crappy little countries always get way too excited when they catch someone from a good country.

He went on a tourist visa! Try that here and you'll end up in a tiny sell where people often don't leave alive.

Wow. So sorry for them

Of course I’m not completely unsympathetic, but there are some regimes you just don’t mess with, and Myanmar’s one of them - has been like that for years, and worse since the coup.

That said, I imagine they’ll release him in a few months, once they’ve made their point.

Japan, when you sleep with thieves...

In America,on a tourist visa, you cannot work and do anything, that you are paid for or seek to make money from even as a filmmaker

Considering the amount of money Abe gave them you would think they would be a little more appreciative..

Excuses, excuses. Myanmar's regime is nothing but a junta of scummy thugs. This was obviously a kangaroo court.

You can fail anywhere in the world, but do not do it in another country

Just add $3,000,000 in the brown envelop and hand it over to the right person and he will be free in no time.

Another disgusting tyrannical dictatorship behaving with complete impunity - where the hell are the U.N. ? What is their purpose if they can't intervene quickly and effectively to prevent more unnecessary deaths and suffering, this Junta should be rounded up and the leaders shipped to the I.C.C. in The Hague for their war-crimes...... More than 2,500 dead, more than 20,000 arrested with prolific tortures being administered.

This unfortunate Journalist was just doing his job, just as Aung San Suu Kyi was trying to maintain a semblance of normality to their repressed society - time for the free world to make it's voice heard now in the darkness there.

Japanese Companies should cease business activities with Myanmar, or explain why they are not doing so...
