Nagoya woman arrested for setting boyfriend on fire

Police have arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of killing her boyfriend by setting him on fire at the couple’s apartment in Nagoya.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 9 p.m. on Tuesday at an apartment in Moriyama Ward, Sankei Shimbun reported. The suspect, Maya Kushima, reportedly poured lighter oil on her 52-year-old boyfriend Junichi Hayakawa while he slept and then set him on fire.

Following the crime, the woman visited a nearby police koban but there was nobody there as they were out on patrol. So she used the phone to report the incident, telling authorities that she had “caused a fire” and had “perhaps murdered a person.”

When police arrived at the scene, they found Hayakawa on his bed, his body severely burned. He has taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Neighbors were quoted as saying they could hear a loud noise coming from the couple’s apartment at the time of the crime.

Rest in peace... but what a way to go.

Absolutely horrible way to go, and obviously the 'loud noise' the people heard was the 52-year-old boyfriend waking up and screaming in absolute agony before he died. Lock this woman up NOW! And please, please, no 'bell-jar lottery sentences'. I don't want this woman getting 1.5 years and then some guy getting 20 for stealing from a temple or something.

25 year-old dating a man 52 years-old. Theres the first clue that she's a nut job.

Many Japanese women tend to like guys between ten years older to twice their age. Teenage age girls often chase guys up to fifty plus if they're still sexy.

I fail to see that. Does that go for all people dating 'outside' their age range? What about a 35 year-old and a 52 year-old? OK?

Maya Kushima... poured lighter oil on her 52-year-old boyfriend... while he slept and then set him on fire

He was not her "boyfriend", he was someone whom SHE HATED and WANTED DEAD. Once you read bwteen the lines and accept that he was not her "boyfriend" then the story makes sense.

There's more sadness here than we'll ever understand.

Miserable. Women in Japan are so weak that when they do feel like lashing out they go overboard like this. She's 25 going out with a 52 year old for gods sake. What a miserable life women have here

what I don't understand is how he didn't wake up and try to put himself out

Maybe he did.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

When one of us does it, they're a lone nutjob and we shouldn't be judged. When one of them does it, it's a trend.

Since her motivations are unclear, I'm not sure why she had to set her 52-year-old boyfriend on fire. In any case, it's like hearing the death cry of the middle-aged man. RIP.

A man was just burned to death in his sleep, by a woman, and this is the first thing you think?

That is definitely on my list of top 3 WORST ways to day. RIP Mr. Hayakawa. There has to be so much more to the background of this story though. What sort of "loud noises" were heard by the neighbors?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

A loud noise' but kankenai. Hardcore. A wee knock on the door by the resident dude?

Lots of speculation going on here. She could have been a gold digger that got upset when the cash ran out, or he could have been an alcoholic that beat her, and she got pushed to her limit. I'd like to know more before I pass judgement (not that it really matters).

He was her boyfriend and she hated him and wanted him dead. How does that work for you...?

In her call to the police she didn't say "I think I murdered my boyfriend"... What if this 52 yo held the woman captive for a long while and this was her chance for freedom? Juz a thought...

And at that moment, she sang "This.....man is on fireeeeee! This......man is on fireeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

Fuben - Big difference between your example and the reality here. A 25 year-old dating a man 27 years older clearly has issues. As someone said earlier, daddy issues. Sure their might be the odd case where a relationship like this is born out of true love and actually works, but they would be very very rare. This relationship is proof the woman suffered from some sort of trauma in her life.

Reckless - If at 52 you hook up with a girl as young and mentally screwed up as this one, well, good luck.

And what if he hooks up with a girl who is as young and mentally fine?

Nothing wrong with large age differences if the people get along. The idea that an age difference means one or the other is screwed up is so outdated.
