'Naked man' on JR train receives suspended sentence

A man arrested for public indecency after he stripped naked and took photos of himself on a JR train in Kanazawa last September was found guilty and given a suspended sentence.

According to the Kanazawa District Court, Masatoshi Komai, 22, who runs a restaurant in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, undressed on a train bound for Kanazawa and took some photos of himself during the brief stop at Kanazawa Station. The photos went viral on Twitter.

Komai told the court he did it as a prank for his friends, NTV reported.

The presiding judge said: "It was a shameless act and there can be no extenuating circumstances, even if it was a ridiculous prank. It also affected the train service."

However, the judge noted that Komai had shown remorse and sentenced him to six months in prison, suspended for three years.

A prison sentence?? Absolute madness.

Sheesh six months in prison? Is the human body really THAT offensive?

11 ( +15 / -4 )

Idiot! Far better to fine him for basic stupidity.

I feel like Sgt. Hulkaburger in "Stripes". "Lighten up, Francis."

He's gonna stop traffic

Masatoshi Komai, 22, who runs a restaurant

Maybe needs to change it to a strip joint featuring himself as the main attraction.

Good a suspended sentence because he suspended his clothes :P

What exactly does 6 months is prison suspended for 3 years mean? I read about suspended sentences, but never quite sure what it means. After 3 years he will go to jail for 6 months or if no other incidences during 3 years their is not jail time?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

If he stays clean he goes free after 3yrs but if he causes a 2nd incident he goes to jail for the 6month plus the sentence for the new offence.

Common for minor offences and keeps the prison emptier and don't cost the taxpayer.

@nikkeiboy. Its the second if no other incidences during 3 years their is not jail time. You are always kind of black listed though.

6 months prison ( suspended ) for getting naked but only 8 years for child murder as that woman got yesterday, where is the balance and reality ?

Readers, please stop comparing sentences for different crimes. It's not relevant.

Was he on a streak?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

A good once in a life time experience . I'd do the same for a good memory to recall when I get old.

I really only have one unanswered question about this article, "Were there kids on the train?". If there were then fair enough. If there weren't, then who cares.

Hope he had zoom on the camera...

It is somewhat relevant as we're talking about prison sentences .

If the guy had mental problems or what have you I could see the suspended sentence (and I agree six months is a bit much), but as it is the guy seems normal (well, somewhat) and is an adult, so he should face some kind of penalty aside from a suspended sentance. Hopefully he at least has to perform a certain number of hours of community service.

The reason for the delay was announced as chinchin jiko.

Lol...Hilarious. Well, from a different point of view... He'll have plenty to flash where he'll be going !! Good luck with that....

"some kind of penalty aside from a suspended sentance".

Smith, he now has a criminal record and all the lifetime of hassle that affords. Restrictions on travel. Difficulty finding new employment, getting in-laws, etc.

For getting naked on the train? Who cares, it's just a naked person. We were all born that way and we're all going to die that way.

In Japan, don't mess with train services, people get pretty mad about it.

Kids these days, with modern technology, are getting so lazy.

I remember back in my day, you had to take off all your clothes and then run really fast yourself, and be seen by a lot of real people to call yourself a streaker.

This guy takes off his clothes in an empty car, lets the train go fast for him and then, with no-one around, takes digital pix for virtual friends, and he wants respect? po-leeaze...

Why is it I always seem to miss all the fun ???

" The reason for the delay was announced as chinchin jiko."

Good one! Hope he didn't get pinched by the doors! But I think he wanted to one-up the "No Pants" stunts people did in various places a week or two ago.

I was there. I saw it all.

I was so scared because when I saw the naked man, I was afraid he might be hiding some sort of weapon under his...I mean in his...I mean up his...oh, okay. There was no way he was hiding anything dangerous, no reason for fear and okay, I was not really there. But if I was I would not have pooped my pants. Just sayin.

Amazing how this guy gets 6 months for being naked, while Smap's Kusanagi was never prosecuted for his nakedness at Tokyo Midtown. Maybe this guy should have said to the cops, "What's wrong with being naked?" like Kusanagi did, lol.

ROFL!

All you have to do is "express remorse" and you can get away with so much in Japan.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Hopefully he at least has to perform a certain number of hours of community service.

If train schedules were affected, I'd hope so too. Even a minor delay can cause serious problems for a lot of people who rely on timely services.

Komai told the court he did it as a prank for his friends, NTV reported.

Selfish twit.

You get some threads about Japan, where all the posters say 'Japan needs to lighten up', 'Japanese people work to hard', 'Japan needs more fun'. Then you get a thread like this where the guy does something silly, but doesn't actually hurt anyone or anything, and everyone cries about how much he sucks.

I am just waiting for the day I step into a train on my way into work and a 'flash mob' of 'hot talento' goes all birthday suit crazy and sings YMCA!

I'd like to see what the judge would say then... ;)
