Nara man arrested after hitting two-month-old son, causing brain hemorrhage

A 20-year-old man was arrested for assault on Wednesday, accused of hitting his two-month-old baby boy, inflicting a subdural hemorrhage, leaving the boy still in critical condition as of Thursday morning, police said.

Shohei Ishikawa is accused of hitting his baby in the face twice at around 6.30 a.m. Wednesday morning after the baby started crying and his de facto (common-law) wife went to the bathroom. He is also accused of knocking the baby from his mother’s arms when she came back and held the baby, causing the boy to fall about 50 centimeters to the floor.

Police said the couple took their baby to a hospital in Tenri City just after 7 a.m. after the baby started losing consciousness. A staff member at the hospital called police alerting them to a possible case of child abuse.

Ishikawa has admitted to hitting the boy on Wednesday and told police that he had hit and pinched the boy numerous times over the last two months when he started crying at night. Ishikawa also said that he had lost his dispatch job in February and had been irritated since, being unable to find a new job.

In Japan, it looks like, there should be a license to become a father. You need to take training, pass some exams. Why won't a 20 year old understand that he shouldn't hit a 2 month old baby!

broken animal, time to put it down. simple.

Whenever someone is frustrated or "irritated" in this case someone else always seems to pay for it.

Without totally being a Japan basher, the frequency and sickness of child abuse in Japan is truly alarming. Yes, child abuse happens everywhere, but... it always seems to be the same scenario in Japan. Frustrated parent (or step parent) lashes out at small child resulting in serious injury or death to the child. It seems there is no control of emotions. I'm sure they all deeply regret their actions, but why pick on kids? Gutless, immature sickos!

I agree with FM: Just put this guy down. He has no business walking the earth doing sh*t like that.

As compared to what or where? You can't read Japan Today and reach any conclusion on frequency and whether it's abnormally high or not...as for sickness, kids being found in suitcases in swamps and having their flesh eaten sounds sick to me as well.

I can't stand it...

I'm assuming his de facto wife is around the same age as this guy. Kids shouldn't be having kids. There is a serious lack of education in these matters for some of these "parents". Condoms anyone?

A young father = an immature kid?

Fricken loser.... They should charge this loser with attempted murder, not assult.

He's irritated, so that's a completely acceptable form of behaviour then. Just as long as he says sorry and bows for a few cameras, I'm sure all will be forgiven and he can go back to hitting his kid.

MAD MAN!! thats what happen when immature people gets married.

its been an interesting week to say the least. I've decided not to hang out the vigilante today. I'm usually in the mood to seek all these losers out and castrate them, but not today. As each day goes by I'm realizing killing the innocent is becoming a way of life here

He beat up a 2 month old.......what a hero!!! Does not deserve to be walking this Earth. What goes around comes around.

I read about children being neglected, abused, injured, molested, killed EVERY DAY in Japan.

I will give 100,000 yen to anyone that breaks Shohei Ishikawa's knees. I don't live near Nara so I cannot do it myself.

Informed: I read about children being neglected, abused, injured, molested, killed EVERY DAY in Japan.

If you are bored, perhaps you can go somewhere else and read about it twice a day.

Did it make the baby quiet? I am thinking no.

What I can't understand is why people in Japan aren't jumping up and down demanding the government take action, a public inquiry, ANYTHING to react to this alarming trend.

Yes, it happens elsewhere - baby P in the UK was a classic example - but the whole country went crazy, heads rolled, senior councillors resigned, doctors were struck off - here there just seems to be no reaction to this ongoing madness

This is not a japan issue, child abuse is rampant in every country. And most of the cases are just the same as this. Immature man/woman irritated about work/relationships/physical problems...

The solution is simple. Community relationships. And that can start right here today with everybody reading these posts making a commitment to meet their neighbors, invite them to dinner, befriend them and for those with little kids, offer to watch the the kids for a while occasionally so mom/dad can get a break.

The biggest single cause for the increasing rash of child abuse is the breakdown of the extended family. People leave their hometowns to get work etc. and find themselves without any kind of emotional support. Coming to Japan with 3 young children, I can understand the frustration and sense of helplessness that overcomes young parents. Lets all work to see that our young neighbors grow up cared for and healthy.

It takes a village to raise a child.

hakujinsensei: good post, I wish you lived in my neighborhood. I usually try to strike up conversation with neighbors and passer-byers myself. The more the merrier!

Most, not all, but most Japanese people don't voice their opinion unless something affects them directly/personally. There's good and bad to that.

To those who continually judge the country of Japan based on the "Crime section": Why don't you focus your comments on the crime and criminal instead of the Country? Crime has no borders.

Hi is being unable to find a new job. Why he didn't sell the baby instead of bouncing him around? Will he get suspended sentence due to his unemployment? Any shrink available in Japan to take this scumbag on boeard?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This moron doesn't get it. All he probably remembers is being hit and pinched when he misbehaved as a youngster and feels the same should work for THIS kid. Big difference between the two, though... back then, he was old enough to understand WHY he was being hit/pinched and so the punishment actually might deter future bad behavior. A two-month-old can't comprehend that his crying is what's causing the pain and uses his natural instinct to alert his mother that there's a problem by crying louder. This start a vicious cycle between the baby and the brain-challenged 20-year-old.
